I bought my 38 in May 2022 (manufactured in March 2022) . How do I check if I am affected by the coolant issue..

so far I've been okay..
Sorry to say but your car is likely is affected. This issue wasn't really resolved until earlier this year. So, it is likely a '22 car has BC1 coolant in it instead of BC2. The good news is that there maybe little to no crystalization. But get the fluid swapped.

Hello,

Totally normal. When the coolant is changed it's possible that air gets trapped inside the circuit. After driving for a while the air will come out in the reservoir and the coolant level will get lower.
Hello, let me tell my experience regarding the coolant...I never had the coolant warning but when I had my car serviced they have changed it..although a few days after I went for a trip of around 300kms (with hot weather)..when I got to the destination the coolant inside the reservoir was like boiling (bubbling)..a few hours after turned off the vehicle..this was the level..

Called Hyundai and they told me that the coolant was incorrectly changed since it had air inside, therefore, I needed to return to the repairshop so they could do it properly that time (and to avoid driving with that level)...
After new operation, the level was like this

Two months after (around 5k Kms), the level is like this

(around the division part of the reservoir) so I wouldn't be so relaxed with the level on minimum level.

Thank you

Best regards,
Bruno

The small bubbles on the side of the reservoir were present on my car since new. I drove 15.000 km with the car and absolutely no problem and the level is below MIN for a while now. Thing about it...when filling all the liquids in the factory do you think they will spend time to wait until all the air is flushed from the system? I think not. All the air will get eventually out and then it makes sense for the coolant level to get low. IF it will continue to go down then there is a problem. If it's below MIN and didn't drop more then I don't see a problem.

In my opinion they only added more coolant to the reservoir the second time you went to the dealer. Did you actually see them doing the coolant change again?

Hi, it was bubbling like if it didn't have enough liquid... (like when you have water boiling in the cooker) that was what alerted me as well the significant noise that came from there (it was easily noticeable inside the car)..

I didn't see them changing the coolant even because they told that the procedure should take time.

Best regards,
Bruno

If your coolant is boiling, there is definitely something wrong. I can't imagine it boiling, as I can't think of anything getting that hot (in an EV vs ICE), without damage. The coolant should be circulating and removing heat. I think coolant's boiling point is over 300F (around 160C).
I think what you may be seeing is bubbling and this usually is because as the pressure rises, trapped air bubbles are coming up into the reservoir. It usually points to larger trapped air somewhere in the system. Once that air is released, you will see your reservoir level go down (replacing air with fluid).
Another, simple yet rare check is to make sure your reservoir cap is tight and on properly and doesn't leak. If not, over time air (containing moisture) increases water concentration and brings down boiling point.

I don't think it was actually boiling. It appeared so because of the air trapped inside the circuit. If it reached that high temperature to boil then a hose or something would blow for sure because of the pressure build up.

I had my 38 coolant replaced in September 2023 and noticed the reservoir level had dropped below minimum over the latest 2,000 miles
I visited a Hyundai garage and bought a 2 litre bottle of the blue stuff to bring the level up.
I have 1.75 litres available to anyone in Cumbria if that is helpful.

@catstevecam How much did the 2 litre bottle cost if you don't mind me asking? (Just wondering if the cost has come down as it was insanely expensive last year)
20 GBP was the price at a main Hyundai garage - I had hoped they would offer a top-up for free ! (ever the optimist)

Ours has just started popping up the message. Was hoping it would every now and then but it's many times per week so have it booked in. Service staff said to try topping it up as they will charge us the ÂŁ120 inspection fee if no warranty issue found. We obviously don't want that.
Can I assume this is easy enough to carry out? I'm a trained marine engineer so very much not afraid of tools, but assumed this would be a somewhat sealed system. If it's an easy task and the level is genuinely low, is there likely to still be a fault? Where would the fluid be going? With a running engine you can lose it in the oil, fuel or external leak with each pointing to specific issues. Do these just drop fluid through seals and hose fittings?

They tried to pull the same inspection fee nonsense with me. Waited on the phone while they confirmed it was a recall issue. You could have a quick look under the hood to make sure it's not below the Min line but other than that it's a recalll/warranty issue and won't cost you a penny.

It's not something you can fix yourself, if you scroll back a bit on this thread you will see Hyundai have supplied their dealers with a special bit of hardware to do this work.

This I didn't realise. Thanks!!

Like you say, have a quite look at the level and move on. I'll dig back through the pages and make sure we are armed with the best possible info. It's MrsG's car and she'll likely be the one dropping off. She's not that technical so I'll have to prep her.

Jus thought I would add my experience to this thread. My Ioniq 2020 Limited is sitting around 55,000 mi on odometer. Around Nov 2021, I started to get this "refill warning" as well. Left the car at the dealership for 2 months, they replaced both pumps, the problem was fixed for maybe 2 weeks, then it's been on ever since. I tried a different Hyundai dealership a few months ago, left the car with them for 2 months, again, no fix. Hyundai is saying there is no fix for it. Currently, I'm in conversation with Hyundai of America Corporate to hopefully do a buy-back of the car. It's been frustrating, but I think it's pretty obvious given that they stopped manufacturing this model of Ioniq and moved on to the other ones.
What's the resolution of this? Looking at buying a 2020 Electric SE with 24k miles on it but I'm googling "coolant" since the used one I'm buying had that show up for service and it seems it might be a potential headache to inherit!

OK* read like at least 5 pages of this entire thread and it seems in the last ones everyone is chilled out including the battery system haha so nevermind! I think the resolution seems set!
