Rear Inverter Replacement (AWD)

I took my Ioniq 5 to the dealership because I was getting a "check EV system" warning light with the AWD warning as well.

Power was cut to less than half with reduced top speed. DTC stated something like "Drive Motor A" overcurrent/malfunction. After driving for 30+ miles and restarting the car, the errors would go away and the car would drive like normal. This happened twice in about 2 weeks.

The dealership did an initial inspection and couldn't find an issue. Hyundai tech line said to dig deeper, remove subframe and inspect the inverter for loose connections, and if nothing is found to replace the inverter.

Has anyone here ever had to replace an inverter? Sounds to me it's basically replacing the rear motor. Are replaced inverters expected to last as long and reliably as originals? I'm just worried that if it wasn't right from the factory that it would just be even harder to get right after the fact in a garage.

I am sure a new one is as good as the original. Inverters are typically reliable but nothing is 100%. It does sit on the motor and it’s basically your “carburetor” equivalent to a gas engine . It allows electricity to get to the motor from the battery at variable levels when you press the accelerator pedal. It also diverts power from the moTor back to the battery when regenerating. Keep us posted on the progress of The new one. Hopefully the part is available and you will be on the road soon.

The inverter is basically bolted to the top of the motor. I could see reasons why Hyundai would replace just the inverter or do a combined inverter & motor swap. As mentioned the inverter is the power supply & controller for the motor and it handles a lot of current, which is why it's on one of the cooling loops.
