I had the rattle in my RWD SEL and decided to wrap the lower bumpers with felt tape and that worked for a while. Seemed to close the trunk a little "tighter" but over time the felt tape would wear a bit and then the rattle would start to come back.

I ended up buying some Honda brand "shin etsu" silicone grease and applied it generously on all 4 bumpers as well as the the mechanical/electronic latch, as well the the metal hook it locks to. No noise so far in about 100 miles of driving and in cold weather.

If the noise returns every couple of months in cold weather I have no issues just trying to grease things up again.

Very surprised to see the "washer method" end up adding some wear and tear to those bumpers.

The type of grease that I purchased also apparently works wonders on breathing new life into weather seals around the car and is generally good for rubber/plastic in general.
Can you explain what you mean by wrap the lower bumpers with felt tape? Thx.

You can see how much the adjustable stops compresses if you get on your knees and look up where the stop meets the body as the tail gate closes, and adjust accordingly. I also used wave washers under the tail gate guides. They were .75mm thick, I could only find flat washers over 1mm thick. My tail gate is really quiet after doing those things.

I too had the dreaded rattle but I think I have stopped it ! The problem is not the adjustable boot stops but the two bits of hard plastic to the sides which locate the boot in the closed position. I have stuck a piece of Velcro on top ( the felt bit not the loops) and now all is very much quieter. The pics show what I did, hope this helps. View attachment 46211

I did this too (with some felt) and the rattling has stopped. Thanks v much for the suggestion - it was driving me nuts!

For me, adjusting the stops (as @jjioniq5 shows here - Rattle in Ioniq 5 tailgate) worked. I needed to unscrew the stop on the one side that was rattling until the hatch closed tightly. That quieted the rattle.

The annoying part is that the stops are so loose that they keep shifting. But if I can figure out a way to adjust the stop, and then make that adjustment more or less permanent, it should solve the problem.

My UK dealer just fixed mine after finding the TSB on the system. Can't see exactly what they did but the silence is bliss! Wish I'd got it done earlier.

What if the hatch rattle isn't actually in the hatch? My SEL is rattling from what seems like the charge port area. I noticed how loud it was after charging. The charge port door was closed of course, and the cap put back on fully. Although there are no other moving parts I know of back there, I didn't open the hatch while charging....

After getting hold of the TPB which my dealer said didn't exist he has today fitted the 1mm washers and peace and quiet have returned. They have 4 other owners who have the same problem but I bet the dealership don't tell them it was another owner who showed them how to fix it!

Looking at what is needed it should be possible to do yourself. 4 penny washers and the correct Torx driver will do the trick if you fancy your chances of having a go.
I'm just skeptical about the homegrown fix. Not that it doesn't work, but that it isn't really fixing the problem. Since the hatch rattle wasn't there on delivery and has only gotten worse, I'm not sure the washers is fixing the problem. Unless somehow the rubber seal has compressed or something else has changed, allowing the hatch to develop play... But then the fix is a non-compressing hatch seal... See where I'm coming from? Of course, I don't know what I don't know. The hatch didn't rattle on day one and the washers weren't there then....

Also remember, as the temps hit Below Freezing things shrink. I was out in -5F last night and could hear a few new sounds.
I don't worry about it because it is just the cold. Once it gets back to 40F it should be fine.

I do have a wire that sometimes rattles in the pillar by my head, between the driver/rear door. Hope it goes away come Spring. If not I will just take tha panel off and retape or foam around it............Not worth wasting my time with the dealer on something small

I had my rubber stops replaced by the dealer when I went in for service for free. Good news, rattle is gone. Bad news, I can see the new rubber stops already starting to wear out in about a week and around 500K traveled, 80% highway around freezing temps.

Hello everyone,
I've had this tailgate rattle noise for the last few months, I loath to take the car to the dealer as it's already been back twice for faults that they still haven't fixed! Anyway, I tried unscrewing the pads at the base of the tailgate - that made the rattle worse, I don't think they're designed to take the weight of the tailgate but the big chunky blocks on the sides are. So, I screwed the bumpers back in fully then out one whole turn and I added the 1mm spacers under the rigid plastic blocks that are on the side of the tailgate itself. I didn't like the look of washers since they leave a dirt trap underneath the block so I 3D printed some 1mm shims from ABS.

They worked an absolute treat! Thanks everyone for this thread - silence is restored, from their at least - I have a clicking under the front of the passenger side dash that sounds like its coming from high up near the windscreen now 🤦‍♂️.
Anyway, if anyone that wants to print their own fix here's a link to the .stl file i5BootSpacer, slice with your fav slicer and print away.

Thanks all,
Lee

From what I've seen, the rubber wears off and it'll be rattling again soon. My dealer replaced ones are already wearing after just 2 months. I think the rubber is too stiff and it doesn't have enough give, wearing off rather than absorbing the movement of the hatch.

Hmmm my rattle does seem to have returned after being silenced for a few weeks by the washer insert trick, the above would explain it. What a pain!
