Random Rapid clicking noise

I have this noise coming from the dash at random times. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't affect anything. Driving is the same, cruise, climate, radio, turn signals, lights, brakes, regen - nothing is affected by it. I've tried turning everything off and on when it happens.

The noise typically lasts about 10 seconds but has gone on as long as 20 seconds.

I can drive an hour and not hear it. I can drive for 10 minutes and hear it 2 or 3 times.

I've even turned the car off and the noise continues.

Any Ideas?

Hello.

I have the same problem.
Did they give you any solution? Did they find the cause?

Thank you.

I'm having the same exact issue with our 2019 Ioniq Hybrid Blue. For a week or two if we turned off the recirculate function it seemed to stop for a bit. But now it happens either with recirculate on or off. No pattern as to why it happens that I'm able to figure it out.

In April we had it at the dealership and they said it only happened to them once for 30 seconds and it wasn't enough time to troubleshoot the issue so they just gave us the car back. I have another appointment with them in about 2 weeks because we have a bit over 57k on the car so the 60k bumper to bumper warranty is coming up soon and the noise is happening more frequently now.

Frustrating that they can't seem to figure this issue out.

Can you explain why you think that would solve it?
The clicking noise is caused by gear movement of the internal air diversion flap within the air pipe. ADS comes on when the cabin humidity becomes too high and the system switch on the Aircon and divert the cool air towards windscreen. I guess the gears of these flaps were made of plastic and when the driving motor skips some teeth, it caused the clicking noise.

So you had this problem yourself?
My ADS is always off.
The noise occurs at varying lengths 2 seconds to 20 seconds.
It only occurs by itself not when manually selecting any climate settings.
It occurs when climate system is not in use.
It occurs when the car is powered off.
Noise only occurs in warm weather.
Currently I can stop the noise temporarily by selecting front defrost but that was not the case last summer. Nor does this stop the problem from reoccurring.

Btw, do you have the air climate system on AUTO, if so then switch it to manual mode ( face or face + foot) instead, in AUTO mode the system could select various ventilation options, that might cause the gear noise of these diversion flaps.

I posted this in another thread (https://www.ioniqforum.com/threads/...com/threads/2018-ioniq-hybrid-clicking-sound-and-ac-recirculation-button.43481/) so I hope it helps some of you with this issue too:
Same thing at the dealership I went to. They just wanted to send the car back without even trying to diagnose the issue for more than a few hours (this was the second time I left the car with them regarding this issue, the first time they claimed they couldn't duplicate the issue). I ended up emailing the dealership president, sales manager and service manager. Then they finally decided to keep the car for a few days (they provided me with a loaner) and ended up replacing a fair amount of parts. I've attached screenshots of the work order/receipt I received from the dealership showing what they did (they kept the car for about a month waiting for parts to come in).

My dealer cannot reproduce it reliably, but I think it happens when the ambient temperature changes. Every time the dash shows a different temperature, I hear the sound.

Now, does anyone know where the ambient temperature sensor is located in this car? I assume it is some kind of NTC that is mounted somewhere in the front of the car, but I cannot relocate it. If I can, I may be able to manipulate it to help the dealer in replication. Their first assumption, BTW, was that it is a fan, probably in the infotainment system. I just don't believe that at all, but before investing a lot of money in it I want to do my own investigation.

I have the service manual for the Hybrid. Assuming this bits similar, here's what I can glean from the pics.

Photo sensor in top of the dash at the front, near base of windscreen. Measures sunshine so can adjust for sloar radiation incoming.

Auto defogging sensor located at top of windscreen in the middle.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor mentioned, no location given.

In-car Temperature Sendor

"The In-car air temperature sensor is built in the heater & A/C control unit.
The sensor contains a thermistor which measures the temperature of the inside. The signal decided by the resistance value which changes in accordance with perceived inside temperature, is delivered to heater control unit and according to this signal the control unit regulates in-car temperature to intended value.
"

Then 2 photos of removing the A/C & Heater Controls box below central console screen + buttons-below.
Pic shows 2 rotary knobs on this, lower-left end & lower-right end (temp & fan-speed on my '38).
2nd photo shows removing 2 large white connectors at the back - skip this if not removing from car.

Photo 2 (rather low-resolution) shows removing the large white sensor in the central spot at the back, looks to have red wires.
- - - - - - - - - -

"The ambient temperature sensor is located at the front of the condenser and detects ambient air temperature. It is a negative type thermistor;
resistance will increase with lower temperature, and decrease with higher temperature.
The sensor output will be used for discharge temperature control, temperature r Create thread egulation door contrl, blower motor level control, mix mode
control and in-car humidity control.
"
Diagram points roughly to location, looks to be tucked behing & below the front-left headlamp unit.

Removal involves taking front bumper off.

I suggest you get the manual!
