Yesterday I bought my 2017 Ioniq Hybid SEL to the dealer (Hyundai of New Port Richey (FL)) for an oil change. The car has approx. 22000 miles. When I was waiting for the car the service writer came out to tell me I needed a Fuel Induction Cleaning Service - 3 Part for $139, and that if I didn't that deposits would build up and hurt the performance of the car. Supposedly these deposits are from the gasoline.

My BS filter immediately went off and I refused the service. I have also checked the owner's manual and found no reference to this service. Am I correct in assuming this is totally unnecessary and is just the dealer trying to get more money out of me for unnecessary junk? There may be a sucker born every minute but I'm not going to be one of them!

You would note any change in `performance` as a mpg-hit which as a diligent owner you couldn't miss as your mileage would take the kind of hit you couldn't ignore, and lights would be shining bright on the dash. >:)

Your BS filter also doesn't need replacing! :D

This is something that servicing dealers have been foisting off on unsuspecting owners for several years. It is a complete rip off. Back in the mid 60's, the auto dealership I was working for while in college sold several cans of additives - what I called "mechanics in a can" to unsuspecting customers, when in for their regular service. The mechanics loved to do this because there was a metal disk in each can and they could get cash for turning in the disks to the additive supplier.

Unfortunately, it's not a scam. Ioniqs have GDI engines (gasoline direct injection) so the fuel doesn't wash over and clean the injectors.

Here's my PHEV engine at just 55K miles, necessitating replacement of 3 of the 4 fuel injectors under warranty. Dealer wants $305 for the cleaning service so I may try this by myself ($20 for a can): https://knowhow.napaonline.com/how-to-use-crc-gdi-intake-valve-cleaner/
