Update from dealer. They had the TSB but I couldn’t get the number - very long and they wouldn’t let me see it. There is also a service announcement about this issue - saw the page from UK head of service (I think) which identifies Kona, Ioniq and possibly other models. From later this month dealers will be getting the equipment to flush and replace the coolant as per the TSB. The TSB document seemed to be a lot of pages!
Was advised that they had spoken with Hyundai Tech and that is ok to drive the car still.

I may be contacted directly as part of this ‘recall’ but as it’s a service announcement rather than a safety recall that may not happen.

The service announcement for Ioniq was 20d140.
So good news - Hyundai are aware and rolling out a fix. Looks like a lot of vehicles affected by this but it shouldn’t cause any damage to vehicle to keep using it. Obviously get that checked at dealer and get onto their list to sort it.

I hope this helps you all.

I can confirm the above. Local dealer gave dates of 13th Feb for equipment to be in dealers and call after that to make appointment.

Since this is a warranty issue and I am just a couple of months short of my 40K service I am expecting my service to be much cheaper since they cannot charge me for changing the coolant!

I specifically asked about this! I’m only 500-1000 miles off that service and suggested it should not need doing twice. I was glad I was already sat down as that service is apparently nearly £500! Sounded like a lot of that is labour for coolant change. Definitely worth asking about it.

Edit: I did get a positive response to this suggestion so fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Does yours come on mid-journey?
As an engineer in contact with IT engineers everyday :p, that was the first thing I tried (several times) and it didn't work. It is such a random failure (probably due to the bad design that causes random fluid voids). I got mine flushed on september and the issue has not appeared again.

Has anyone had a statement about the 40,000 mile / 4 year service if the coolant is flushed before then? Mine is going in Tuesday 7th for the machine flush and new coolant and is 3 years old. I am assuming, despite having a service plan for 5 years, I am not going to need the car battery coolant flushed again on the 4th service? This would then push back a coolant flush to year 7?

Trying to get a statement from Hyundai on the warranty if not flushed again at y4.

Just got my car back from the dealer with the new fix and had a talk with the tech.

To his knowledge there was no TSB yet but a "campaign" to change the coolant as the ioniqs and kona's come in for a service. In fact, because I had the “refill coolant” error he had to call Hyundai Europe HQ and ask “permission” to run this job under warranty (and not as part of a service) because when he does a lookup on the error, its still the same old flush&burp job. Although clearly everybody knows the coolant is the source of the problem.

Also, this fix/campaign includes a new ECU update (not infotainment update) but he wasn’t sure what software changes it came with. However, when I charge the battery now after service, even in this winter weather - I can hear the coolant pump activate and circulate coolant for at least 5 mins. Don’t know if this is new or it just couldn’t circulate before because of all the crystallization. But its the first time I heard it in since I bought the car in 2020

The error will normally return within 3-4 weeks, so I will post an update if it came back or not. Hopefully this is a true fix.

My new coolant is blue (BSC-2)

So, still some confusion about what's actually the official line from H! Post #342 above says there's a TSB but couldn't see the number. Maybe that was the TSB relating to the Santa Fes procedure (lots of flushing etc) that H has told some dealers to follow?

Also, some cars are getting the Pink coolant, some the BSC-2 (blue)!
Clearly the original BSC-1 (blue) as fitted in 2019 to my early build 38 is obsolete, and has had the crystallisation problem.

But do we know of cars that got the BSC-2 put in and then got the crystallisation problem? Maybe the BSC-2 is actually OK?

Back from the dealers and have more information on work carried out.

There is an official TSB for this issue but it is currently not fully released, not sure what difference is but service manager advised it is still in pre-release status.

The work carried out on my car over the last 2 days was as follows:

  • Coolant light issue reported
  • Confirmed customer complaint
  • Checked speed of WEP1 and EWP2
  • Found EWP2 to have exceed max limit (I guess this is what triggers the refill coolant message)
  • Will require coolant flush procedure as per TSB HCE22-55-P070 AE EV
  • Completed coolant flush procedure as per TSB
  • Refilled coolant and bled
  • Road tested all ok
  • Checked DTCs
  • All Ok
The coolant is blue and filled to the max level.

Service Manager took me into the workshop to show me the 'special machine' from Hyundai and the EV technician showed me a picture of the filter in this machine after he had flushed out my car and it had blue crystal deposits on it.

I have assumed that the coolant has now been replaced with a different one although difficult to tell.

Hope this helps.

My dealer showed me the ‘Service Announcement’ on their computer explaining what would be happening. It was from the UK service manager to all dealers. She suggested that it may be that owners will be contacted, but as it’s a service announcement rather than a safety recall it may get picked up as people have the issue or when vehicles come in for service rather than being contacted pro-actively.

The announcement mentioned several vehicle types including Ionic and Kona. I could see a figure of around 18000 affected Ionics, but didn’t see if this wasUK or wider.

I checked the NHTSA website with the VIN for my 2020 38KWh car and it shows no recalls. It coincides with what my dealer told me a couple of weeks ago when I had my 25K Mile / 40K KM svce.

They topped of my coolant because it was below the min. First time, I'm aware, this had to be done. The fluid they topped it off with was the blue coolant as shown in the image. Curiously, the service manager said it's normal for the fluid to "burp" out air and drop, that Genesis cars are famous for this and always have to be topped off.

The guy who wrote me up for the service (tire rotation and fluid check, no charge) also "suggested" that I bring it in before the 30k mile service that they "recommend" more frequent visits, earlier than every 5k miles (applying dealer ice car arguments for more frequent visits, I guess).
Wonder if these guys ever have any idea what they're talking about.

Any ideas where I can order and buy it today independently from HYUNDAI dealership ? If it is not possible - are there any knowledge what could be closest possible analogs from other different manufacturors ? I tried to GOOLGE it different ways, but with no result so far ...

The bottle costs U$S 80 at the dealerships here in U.S. Might this not be one of those things you should source at a dealer's, for now, just to be sure you're getting the right thing. Didn't look that much, but it seems Castrol has launched (announced) an ev coolant. Sure everybody else will soon have something that can be used, but for now...
