I took my 2020 electric Ioniq to the dealership where I got it for some software updates, apparently they also changed the 12v battery.
Since then it started making this loud clicking/ticking noise every time I start the car, or shut it down; sometimes even after closing the door when I get in.
The noise seems to come from the dash, behind the steering wheel. Here are some videos:

I contacted the dealership and they said this is perfectly normal, to be expected even.
They said its the "main relays", that after updating the battery and the software it now "checks that the relays are ok" for up to 30 seconds.
They also said its permanent.

Is this really normal? Has anyone else had this issue? Should I ask another mechanic to take a look?
It's hard for me to believe such a loud and prolonged noise is normal in such a recent car.
Plus this dealership has a bit of a reputation of messing up EVs when serviced and having a poor customer service.
So I can't shake the feeling that something's wrong here.

Hello there,

I know this moise all too well.

Took my car in for the recall battery swap, and some updates. When I got the car back, it was making the exact same noise.

Went back to the dealers', they ran some more updates and the noise was gone!

Sadly, the car is now refusing to charge at all (DC or AC), a few parts have been changed to no avail, we are now waiting until the end of august for a specific part to come up from Korea.

Their best guess is that the noise is a relay somewhere not working correctly and it fried something.

Definitely back to the dealers ASAP for you.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies.
Specially you, Growiel. I'm glad I found someone with the same issue. Can't believe they messed up something that vital in your case, sorry to hear that.

I will go back to the dealership as soon as I can and demand a fix, if they refuse I'll go to another mechanic I know and trust.
Thanks again!

That noise is definitely not right. You can clearly hear a relay (or similar) opening and closing repeatedly. I'd guess that it's a software issue where some check/ready signal isn't being received properly and the relay keeps retrying until the signal is received. Take it to another dealer and ask them. If you keep getting the "it's normal" response, ask them to show you a new car that does the same thing.

Not sure how it works in your country but here in France you often have better results by going over the head of the dealer and contacting Hyundai France directly, i'd try something like that the dealer insist that's normal.

Mine definitely did not think so, neither did "Hyundai technics" when my dealer contacted them for help with the issue.

Hello again,

I got my car back tomorrow out of the blue ! They received the part way earlier than expected, but I'm not complaining.

Sadly the technician in charge was off when I went to the dealers' so the only explanation I got was that they changed a "fuse box", which seems odd to me.

I will be calling on monday to talk to that guy, I want to know what happened, and why.

Anyways, car is now charging, and NOT making the noise, so again: your dealer is lying to you.

I did not. I went back to the dealership, made a big fuzz about it, and even asked to see a new car with the same issue, but they "didn't have any available."
Their chief mechanic assured me it was normal and that they even contacted Hyundai's factory to confirm. At that point, I decided it was pointless to keep pushing.

They also said that all other vehicles that came for the same upgrade would have the same noise. I confirmed this by asking other Ioniq owners in my country. We're all experiencing the same issue, and they're giving us all the same explanation.
If it ever evolves or is deemed an actual issue by Hyundai, I will gladly return and complain. But for now, I'm leaving it alone.

Heya all. My car started making this noise a few weeks ago, coincidentally my charge port stopped loocking the cable in place when charging.
The dealership diagnosed that the clicking was caused by the failed locking pin actuator. When the "error" was cleared the clicking stopped, but the locking pin was in the locked position until the manual release was pulled - at which point the clicking started again.
It shoiuld be a warranty fix if your vehicle is in the warranty period

I just had my 12 volt battery replaced and I have a clicking sound behind the dash. They told me it's normal. I'm upset. I've had my ionic since day 1 bought it brand new it has 31k miles on it never made clicking sound before
I just read more of the thread apparently this is a thing I too find it annoying but maybe it's something to make sure the 12 volt battery doesn't go bad IDK. Any other thoughts on this?

I just had the same thing happen to me after a software update and a battery coolant flush today. I'll update you as to what they say about it when I talk to them tomorrow.

Wild guess: contactor points are oxidated but not cleaned (burning away oxidation by the arcflame during disconnection under load) due to usage with low load (granny charging 95% of the time).
If this is the case, then having it open and close x times at startup (load?) : Will that burn them clean ? Ultimate solution would be using goldplated contact points in the contactor to prevent them to oxidise in the first place.
=>at least use granny charger at max allowed power
But again: wild guess.

Thanks for the thread!
My 2020 Ioniq hybrid plug in is currently sitting at a Hyundai dealer as I type. The video of the clicking noise is exactly what I was experiencing with mine after a software update. After getting my tires changed over for the new summer season, I asked about a random power surge I would get periodically driving at highway speed. I knew as soon as I went to start the car something was different. The suggestion that it had anything to do with the 30 minute update was dismissed. Sooooo, now it's a waiting game to see if they can clear all codes that came up after "putting the car to sleep " for a part that was replaced in the plug-in area.

My 2020 Ioniq EV (38kw) has just gone back to the Dealer following a software update yesterday (done with the 40000 mile service) that resulted in the ‘clicking’ from near the glovebox on Switch On and Off, and the charging port no longer locking. Apparently they need to order a replacement ‘part’ which will take a couple of days so I’m in a loaner Kona EV for now. Dealer advised it was just a failed software update – I‘ve suggested they get a stock of the replacement parts to minimise customer inconvenience if they have further cars to update. I asked for specific details on the software update but they declined to provide them.

I started getting the clicking noise after a battery coolant flush. They ordered a replacement pump and gave it back to me while the part came in. I heard the clicking then but I just thought they must have left something unplugged and will clear it up when they install the new part. When they installed the new part they said the clicking is normal. I told them it never happened before etc. When I brought it back the next time they said they'd have to hold it for a month to find the issue. A month later I got my car back with the clicking. Hey fixed something else and told me they looked at it and "couldn't replicate". Another ying that stopped working is the auto regeneration that you can enable by holding the right paddle. It doesn't work anymore. The tech just wrote on the report that they contacted the tech line and my car doesn't have that feature! Are you kidding me? It had the feature until I came into your shop!
