Agreed. We don't have wireless CarPlay or Android Auto because Hyundai didn't think the cost of this feature (chips) was worth it from a business perspective.

 

It has nothing to do with hardware. It would violate their license agreement with the supplier of the navigation system in these cars.

Missed change and just cheap.
Really love my Ioniq-5 Lounge RWD but some minor things are supposed to be standard (even the lounge does not have this)

• Progressive steering (I come from a Audi Q2 and this is missing)
• Screenwiper (grr)
• Wireless Carplay (Will buy an extra dongle for that)

 

Hyundai actually announced that Wireless AA and AC are coming (and they a re looking into which models will have it). The Ioniq 5 actually has the required hardware build in (WiFi), it’s just not used currently.

 

That image has been on their website with "coming soon" since at least October 2020. I'm not putting any stock in the image meaning anything. However, the recent story in Chasing Cars out of Australia gives me more hope. They have pulled back the optimism a bit since original publication, but I'm hoping that is more a case of "promise less, deliver more" style than anything else.

 

Yeah definitely. There is currently some drive going on for this topic as Hyundai seemed to talk about it. So I guess something is moving on their side. But it seems like they try to be very closed about what cars could potentially be part of this. The Ioniq 5 has the technical capability so it would be able to get the feature. But from what we know the current reason why it was not released in the beginning were contracts with their integrated navigation provider.

This plus the question if they actually want to take the effort will probably decide if we see an update anytime soon.

No, nothing relevant at the moment. All we know is that the Ioniq5 would be capable but at the same time its unsure if they would even bother adding it or if only newer cars like the recent Kona would be part of such an update. Next to the capability via hardware there also might be licensing topics that hinder this. But to be fair, the recent CarlinKit 5 work so good I actually have no incentive to keep pursuing this topic anymore since I got it. If it ever becomes a native feature I will be happy. until then, the adapter does its job so well its nearly indistinguishable from the real thing.

 

Was looking at carlinkit 5.0 as an option, would you endorse it? Heard both positive and negative feedback namely the lag

 

No updates. But having played with the AAWireless dongle, I'm now curious about how usable Wireless Android Auto is in real life. It drains the battery on my phone pretty darn quickly, and the wireless charging pad doesn't work well (my Google Pixel 7 Pro gets crazy hot, and the battery still drains faster than it charges). I've come to the realization that, at least for now, wired Android Auto is perfectly fine.

 

Using an iPhone, even with wireless CarPlay it stays cool. But those are typical problems with Android. On the other hand, the charging pad is a problem for all devices, depending on various circumstances like if your phone has a protective case which prevents it from laying flat or interferes with the coils in any way. I personally have the Peak Design case for my iPhone, which has a protective border around the cameras. This means it cant lay flat on the ground and adding this to the case material itself it leads to much of the energy meant for charging will become heat instead. My wife on the other hand as a thin and flat case on here iPhone and has no problem with heat on the charging pad of the ioniq. Too bad the ioniq doesn't have a magsafe system, as this would be much more efficient. At the moment I use a regular charging cable with one of the slots above the wireless pad because of this.

 

I am using it with iOS, but so far I didn't have any negative experience with it. It already came with the latest software and all settings and things were set from start. It basically was just a thing of plugging it into the USB port, then connecting the iPhone via CarPlay. Once that's done, the CarlinKit will recognize you are using iOS/Carlink and the Ioniq will also recognize the Phone.

From that on the only thing I do now is getting into the car without touching my phone or anything else and it always directly auto connects. The whole thing it pretty fast and usually done by the time I switch into drive mode. I heard the older versions were noticeable slower especially because CarPlay wasn't natively implemented and always had to be converted. But version 5 of Carlinkit has both AA/Carplay native. On the other hand I personally never tested any of the older versions or other brands. For the Ioniq 5 it works absolutely as expected and as simple as can be including all features that are available with a wired connection, from Siri to button controls.

Speed wise, there is a really small delay compared to a wired connection, but its only really something you would notice on a direct comparison, and so mediocre that for normal usage, you will really not care especially considering the benefits of the wireless connections

 

the ioniq 5 has wifi - and in some markets hyundai is rolling out hotspot functionality trough software updates (wifi connectivity using the build in mobile data connectivity - so kids with tablets can enjoy netflix or so ... ) at a certain rate per Mb wireless connection ... the reason for not having wireless AC / AA is a license issue with their provider of the navigation software, but that is resolved They foresee first wireless AC / AA implementation in the Kona and then will see per model how this will be rolled out.

nevertheless, adapters for wireless AC / AA are abundantly available - so I do not see any blocking issues not to have that comfort already installed (just spend a 100 $ and you're ready to go).

Something for the more audio-sensitive persons - wired AA / AC sounds just that bit more rich than wireless ... but for the rest - all sounds fine ...
