Returned both Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto wireless adapters - poor audio and home WiFi interference makes these not worth it

I tried both the OTTOCAST and CarlinKit 3.0 wireless adapters. I'm very disappointed. Any convenience appears offset by two factors:

1. Diminished audio quality vs. wired Carplay. I listen to a lot of Lossless tracks on Apple Music and I can definitely hear the diminished audio quality, especially on the high end. Even in a not-so-great Bose system, to me, wired CarPlay sounds much clearer and better. So if audio quality is what you want, stay with the wired connection. Not a surprise as USB has a much higher bandwidth than Bluetooth 5.

2. Unfortunately, unless one unplugs the wireless adapter every time you arrive home, you will find that the power to the wireless adapter remains on even after the I5 is turned off. It does use WiFi, so when your iPhone grabs onto your home WiFi network, the wireless adapter continuously tries to connect with your iPhone. The only solution to this issue is to unplug the wireless adapter every time one arrives home. To me, this is the same level of inconvenience as just plugging your iPhone into a USB lightning cable for a factory-wired CarPlay connection.

I've heard rumors that we might have the h/w and just need a s/w update to turn on factory wireless CarPlay. While that might solve Issue 2, it still won't provide the best sound quality.

So wired it is.

I found its WiFi interrupts to be the game changer for me. It’s that same effort to unplug the Ada later as it is to plug my phone into a USB cable. And doing so provides better audio quality, near instant access, and near zero latency. Never said I was an audiophile. If at age 66 with hearing aids I can hear the difference, then there’s a definite difference to enjoy.

I returned AAwireless as well. It wouldn't keep a connection. I ended doing this which is the least inconvenient way to connect wired AA or carplay

I listen to Sirius most of the time and have been using the carlinkit and was so blown away I bought one for my Mazda and two friends with ioniq 5’s. So if you’re not using it for music it’s amazing! I’ve had zero issues at all.

Mike, I hear you—those are valid points, and I had similar frustrations when I first tried the wireless CarPlay adapters. Like you, I initially tested a few, including the CarlinKit, and I almost gave up because of the audio quality issues and the constant need to unplug them. But then I found the best Wireless CarPlay Adapter by AutoSky, it's the best I could find, and it completely changed my perspective.

The audio quality was my biggest concern since I’m a bit of an audiophile too, and I’ve noticed that AutoSky does a fantastic job of maintaining clear, high-quality sound—even for Apple Music Lossless tracks. It’s not quite wired-level quality, but it’s close enough that I don’t feel like I’m missing out. And regarding the second issue, AutoSky somehow avoids that problem. It doesn’t keep reconnecting to my phone after I’ve parked and turned off the car. I don’t know what kind of magic they’ve worked into the design, but it’s been seamless for me.

If you’re still considering wireless CarPlay, I’d highly recommend giving AutoSky a shot. It’s the first adapter I’ve tried that genuinely feels like a set-it-and-forget-it solution, and it’s been a game-changer for both me and my wife.

If both you and your wife are using it how do you tell it which iPhone to connect to when both phones are in the car.

The CarlinKit 3.0 generally works fine for us with reliable and relatively fast connection (and no issues with home WiFi) - but if both phones are in the car it is pain if it connects to the 'wrong' one. No way to switch to the other without either unplugging the adapter or turning off WiFi on the connected phone. You can select the phone during Carplay start up but the process isn't totally reliable and we normally have to tell it 2 - 3 times during start up which one we want connected or else it seems to connect to the last one that connected.
