Pre-conditioning…

I apologize if this question has been asked before or the answer is available in other places. I had bought my 2023 Ioniq 6 7-8 months ago and never heard of the term “pre-conditioning” of battery before.

So now, I see it on the My Hyundai Blue link and it is on “off”. Under what circumstances do I turn it “on”?

Do I do it when outside temps are cold? What must the temps be? Below freezing (32degrees)

Do I do it in advance of plugging car into my Level 1 home charger?

Do I do it before fast charging at Electrify America chargers?

How early before charging do I turn on the pre-conditioning?

Can I set it to preconditioning all the time in the winter?

Any other suggestions appreciated. Once again, I apologize if asked before.

Basically, its function is to heat (or cool) the main battery to 70 degrees F so that when you using a Fast DC charger (does not work with Level 1 or 2 charging). You must set navigation to a charging site that has a DC Charger for it to work so the battery charges quickly. Usually you need to drive about 30 minutes or 30 miles.

Here's a Youtube video:

Pre conditioning will also work when you use blue-link to start the cars climate control.
Very handy here in the winter so far I've seen, as a correctly tempered battery will accept regen better, and have a better performance.

But if you mainly do short runs, it might not pay of using it. (Just a km or three)

Is there any harm having it on all the time? Can you even keep it on all the time thru winter?

Seems to me the people saying you can precondition independently of nav are in Canada. Those who say it only happens when you navigate to a charge station (with which I agree) are in the US. Why is it not possible that both sides are right?

Does all of north America get the same software, or do Canada and US get different versions? Or maybe even the same version that is enabled differently for the two regions?

Yes that one got me again two weeks ago (ioniq 5).

I wondered at first why preconditioning hadn't started then remembered I had changed (AC) max charge % the previous week. Fortunately I was able to turn it back on while driving and preconditioning then started (wasn't sure if that would work during the same drive but it did) on my way to an EA charger. Got 43kWh in 16 mins at max of 180kW which wasn't bad as car had been sitting outside all night at below 40F. Drive was about 10 miles after I turned on preconditioning on and yes the EA charger was set as the destination in car navigation.

Thank you for the mea culpa, and clarifying there are not different regional or trim/model year differences with the feature.

It's all good, we all get ideas in our heads and need a little humility every now and then to bring us to reality. It is part of the human experience!
