Maybe it will all click when mine arrives (I'm told within the next 2 weeks), but I've got to say... even as a prior EV owner (2 Teslas) that had 1-pedal regenerative braking, reading about the Ioniq 5's system hurts my brain.
I have built up a general understanding, but not sure if it's accurate:
0-3 "Normal" regen levels
- These range from ICE-like coasting to the "highest" regen possible. Well, maybe not the highest regen possible, because 3 is differentiated from i-Pedal, so it must not be capable of bringing the vehicle to a complete stop (thus requiring use of the brake pedal)?
i-Pedal
- Basically the same as 3 only... yet stronger? Should this just be thought of as regen level 4? Or, does i-Pedal combine regen 3 with the friction brakes to bring the vehicle to a complete stop (which would imply no regen is strong enough to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, unlike Teslas)?
Auto regen levels
- Vehicle automatically controls regen strength depending on road and vehicles ahead; only operates over 6mph, so no complete stop
- There are many "baseline" levels of auto, some shown in the settings but there are even "hidden" baselines by setting via paddle once in auto
Regardless of regen setting (0-3, i-Pedal, Auto)
- Braking with the brake pedal will apply regen or regen + friction depending on the braking force requested
- Holding down the left paddle does the exact same thing as braking with the brake pedal (??? or does it not apply friction brakes ever)
Yes, I've attempted to read the manual and watch YouTubes... and read forums. Can't find a succinct summary like the above. Would love to know if I'm on the right track...
