Hi everyone

I'm new to use EVs and consider owning a Hyundai Ioniq EV 2017 preowned

While checking its features and specs I found that it run with a 28 KwH battery

And the 2020 run with 38KwH battery
And they look much the same to me

I wonder is it possible to replace the 28kwh battery with the 38 Kwh ?

As the 2020 version not available in my area

No not possible. Battery is different size and voltage.

Biggest issue is that the 38kWh pack is water cooled while the smaller pack is air cooled. Its also heavier. Replacing the pack will require a new bms and probably a interpeter between the new bms and the ecu for the car to properly recognize the new battery. Nothing is impossible, but this is probably not worth the effort, the 38kWh pack is inferior in all but capacity. You might be able to import a my20 from abroad.

There might come some aftermarket lfp packs to upgrade with in the future(im hoping), but as the 28kWh pack is holding up very good to degradation and the first cars are only now running out of warranty it might be a few years still. Should be possible to get 40-60kWh lfp/lfmp into the pack at the same weight once the cells have silicone anodes. (lfp is cheaper and safer(air cooling is enough even with faster charging), but heavier and less energy dense atm, it should be a good candidate for replacement in the 28kWh battery.
