Now I'm waiting on delivery of a 12V-to-5V USB power adapter that I can hard-wire under the dash. That should clean it up even more by not having to run a cable to the cigarette lighter outlet.

So, here's what I have set up. I'm using a right angle USB A to C adapter, with a magnetic connector that I can manually pull at will. It's a bit more manual, but a lot cleaner looking Apologies for the blurry 2nd pic, it was done in a hurry!

But why tho? Is that USB-port always powered? I'm getting my Ioniq 5 this friday. Got the Carlinkit Tbox Plus.

 

Some people say it's always on. I've found mine turns off after a set period of time, sometime within 30min since the blue light on my adapter is off when I look in the window.

 

Yes my Carlink definitely powers down after some time (I haven't measured it but maybe 30 mins?). I definitely see the light is out (and was previously on) if I leave it visible from the window.

 

OK - so reading through again it seems the theory is the USB is powered during the 12V recharge but the lighter socket is not? Is that confirmed that the lighter socket is not powered during 12V recharge?

We have been using the Carlink for a 2 - 3 weeks and haven't noticed either of our phones connecting to the adapter once it powers down. Maybe we have been lucky?

 

Unscientifically, when I walk by and the amber light is on, my phone no longer connects.

 

I turned off the auto unlock, auto mirror extension, and auto tailgate lift on my car since every time that my key was detected, the port turned on. I have verified that now everything stays off once the power times out and only comes on after I unlock my car. I would bet all those sensors always on probably run down the 12v battery.

 

New Ioniq 5 owner as of Monday. I found the location of the USB port up front (the only one you can use for CarPlay) to be very inconvenient. This looks like a nice solution.

I can't seem to figure out which plug will go in which? my power block is completely blocking android auto even when the car is turned off.

 

Power block goes on the left hand USB port, where you would normally plug in the AA adapter. One side of the Y cable then goes into the power blocker, the other side goes into the 12v cigarette lighter adapter. The output of those two then goes to the AA adapter.

Otherwise you need the USB Y cable in OP, and a cigarette --> USB adapter you can find all over the place.

Yes it does. But it will turn on again whenever the 12v battery is refreshed, grabbing your cell phone’s WiFi connection and disconnecting any phone calls or data connections in progress.

 

The new AAWireless 2 has a button that you can set to stop (standby) when you push it. It will not connect till you push the button to start. When I'm home, I just push to button and when I leave, I push the button and it connects in about 30 seconds.

 

Thanks to all the posters for the advice as it helped me get this setup on an Ioniq 5 with the Carlinkit 5.0. I had a similar problem that when using only the usb port for power and data, at times my phone would connect to CarPlay while inside the house.

Purchased the Y cable as OP suggested and a flush adapter for the 12V lighter. I have the power blocker on order, but shipping is about a week. So I cut a small piece of electrical tape and covered the power pin on the USB 3.0 male connector on the Y cable. Worked perfectly!
