I'm curious.

I agree, I think the best deal is an EVSE that reasonably priced and is UL certified or has another respected North American certification. Keeping in mind CEL certification is just a Chinese manufacturer self certification(i.e. meaningless).

I think part of the pricing mojo is based on marketing consistently referencing an EVSE as "charger". They are not, they are just safety interfaces with relay/contactors that engage your home's power when the the EVSE verifies there is a valid ground and the gets the OK from the car's MCU to proceed. The actual charger that rectifies AC to DC is already in the EV.

Is having one of these chargers necessary? What if I get an electrician to put in a regular 240V outlet in my garage, like for a dryer or oven?

I'm new to the EV space and want to learn as much as possible before my car arrives. I'm also trying to keep costs down as much as possible.
I think you will get your info there:

Grizzle-E here as well and I have a 40 Amp circuit and the charger set to 32 Amp. This is 80 % of the circuit's max current and as recommended by the electrician. I've felt the circuit wiring and it's just a bit warm after 7 hours of charging. Not much of a test I know but I feel better knowing there is nothing unexpected going on.

I guess I just wanted to point out to the "new to EV" folks that unless your electrical service can't handle a 40 amp vs 60 amp 240 circuit you should consider an EVSE that can handle a minimum of 48 amps to get max AC charging capacity from the Ioniq 5 or any other newer EV like ID 4, Mach E, Model 3,Y that come with higher capacity single phase onboard AC chargers that can charge as much as 11kWh or faster. The price difference to install higher ampacity wire, breakers is relatively small upfront but considerably more if your electrician is retrofitting.

I currently run a Morec 32 amp EVSE for my Kona, its a relatively cheap unremarkable Chinese unit that I bought off amazon 2 years ago. Its not appropriately NA certified but its been fine otherwise. I will now need the ability to charge 2 EVs once my I5 arrive. I have purchased two 48 amp hardwired Enelx Juicebox EVSEs that most importantly are capable of load sharing on a single 60 amp circuit. When both cars are plugged in each will get 24 amps until one is finished and then the full 48 amp capacity is available to remainder charging vehicle. The other perk is the EVSE will be able generate accurate charge cost reports so I can better track my business tax deductible expenses.

Fortunately I had foresight to over compensate with larger wiring when I installed my EVSE a couple of years ago(I think it cost me a whopping $75 more than the minimum spec higher gauge wire for a 40 amp circuit) and it can now easily accommodate a 60 amp circuit. It just was a PITA to pull the thicker gauge wire through conduit as I recall. I will just need to upgrade the breaker in main panel from 40 to 60 amps(around an extra $50-60) before I commission the new EVSEs

You likely have the overall capacity, but may need a new circuit itself. I have a one year old house with detached garage with just a few 120v plugs in the garage. Just for fun while an electrician was out for another issue, they quoted me a whopping $5-6K to run a new line through the existing conduit to the garage, install a 60A subpanel in the garage and install a 30A plug, permit, and inspection. Needless to say I'll a) be seeing how I do with 110v once I get my Ioniq 5 (normal daily driving is 15 miles, 30 tops for a day of local errands) and b) getting some more quotes because that seems ridiculously high.

I’d be interested if anybody else has tried a V3 Tesla Wall Charger? I have one, configured within the wifi settings to charge “all cars”, it charges my wife’s Volvo PHEV no worries, but it won’t charge the Ioniq 5…just get “failed to charge” every time. Anybody else got this working?
