planning a trip from California to Yellowstone next month in May in my Ironiq 5 and plan on spending every other night in a hotel and the others at KOA campgrounds, have this plan of booking RV sites instead of tent sites and just using a TT30-R plug adapter or something to charge in their RV spots or designed EV Chargers if they have them, just wondering if anyone has done this before

AI Claims:

Yes, some KOA campgrounds do offer EV charging at their RV spots. Some locations have installed Level 2 charging stations, which can charge EVs faster than a typical Level 1 charger. However, not all KOA campgrounds are equipped with EV charging, so it's always a good idea to check with the specific campground you're interested in before booking.
Here's a more detailed look:
  • Not all KOAs offer EV charging: While KOA is working to expand EV charging availability, not every location has it.
  • Level 2 charging: Many KOA campgrounds that do offer EV charging have Level 2 stations, which offer faster charging times than Level 1 chargers.
  • Dual pedestal chargers: Some KOA RV campgrounds also offer dual pedestal chargers, which can charge EVs and provide power to RVs.
  • Check with the campground: It's essential to contact the specific KOA campground you're interested in to confirm EV charging availability and any associated fees.
  • Charging RV-style: Some KOA campgrounds may allow you to plug your EV into a standard RV power outlet (30-50 amps) with an adapter, but this is generally not recommended due to the potential for damage to both the vehicle and the campground's electrical system.
  • KOA is expanding EV charging: KOA is actively working to increase the number of campgrounds with EV charging infrastructure.

I haven't, usually my routes have plenty of L2 and DCFC options. Be aware, some EV sites may not welcome EV charging, even if you pay for an RV space.

TT-30 is 120V, so likely the Iooniq will only pull 120V@12A, and not 24A the way a Tesla might. Better to look for sites with NEMA 14-30/14-50 outlets.

Hello,

Unfortunately we do not have electric chargers. There are public chargers at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone.

Thank you,

Hello,

Unfortunately our system at the park can't handle EV charging and we have had issues with this in the past were it will cause a whole row to go down when attempted. We ask that you do not try and charge an EV on site and rather use one of the locations in town or located in Island Park located about 15 miles west of us in Idaho. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

Thank you so much for the reply and information, if we were to book an RV site and just stay in a tent there, could we charge in an RV site provided we bring an adapter that will allow us to do so, this is a possible if you allow it.

FYI - we travelled to Yellowstone last summer. All of the 8 chargers in West Yellowstone at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center were NACS (Tesla) Superchargers and I was unable to use them. The Holiday Inn West had 4 chargers, but we were not staying there. I had to drive almost 30 miles to Island Park, where they had 2 175kW CCS1 chargers, to charge my Ioniq 5 each night. Our last night we spent in the park at Lake Lodge Cabins, and the rangers allowed us to charge our car at the Teal Lodge Employee Dorms where they had 2 J-1772 220V stations. Charging while visiting the park was by far the biggest challenge of our trip.

I have never charged that a KOA but I do when camping at state parks. One thing that I would be wary of is the quality of the equipment that you are plugging into. Last camping trip I tried my dual voltage Tesla evse on a 50 amp circuit unplugged it after I felt that it was getting too hot. Luckily most state parks in PA have electric vehicle chargers and they are nice robust clipper Creek evses. Good luck!

well I'm glad I changed my mind and went to camp at the beach instead, way closer to home, cause the next morning, she would not start, dead 12v battery, had to get inside of her using the physical key, then asked some strangers to jump start her before I bought this jumper pack, got an appointment for 7:00 am tomorrow at the Stealership to check out the ICCU

Just because it meets it design specs doesn't mean it wasn't designed to be a POS...for this specific vehicle application.

Maybe it's absolutely great...in starting a Smart car.
