Anyone know how why I'm unable to hear any notifications in Android Auto, whether it's Google maps navigation guidance or playback of WhatsApp messages. Spotify or Audible work fine. Very strange, tried turning up the volume on my phone?

I had a similar issue. It was because "Do Not Disturb" mode was turned on, which in turn muted all sounds.
Do Not Disturb mode was being turned on by Android's Driving Mode. You can search Android settings to find the Driving Mode setting and disable the Do Not Disturb mode.
Edit.. it's odd that two of your apps work and the others don't. Maybe it's not what I said but it's worth checking.

I've found if you can adjust the volume while Maps is giving directions, but only while it is giving directions. You have to be quick!

Thought I'd cracked it with this suggestion, I did have DND turned on, but unfortunately it didn't work. I'm going to try using a friends Android and see if the problem is my phone or the head unit. I've had it replaced after issues with usb data port
