A cause of battery drain? Instrument cluster doesn't turn off.

As I went to take the trash out tonight, I saw some lights coming from inside the car. At first I thought it was the regular "charging the 12v battery lights", but they seems odd so I went to double check, here's how I found the car:

I did not have the car keys on me so it's not the car lighting up on approach or anything. Simply unlocking the doors, opening one and locking them correctly turned off the screen.

I'm wondering if this is a common occurence. This might be one of the reason so many people have batteries die on them, this on all night can't be good for the small 12v battery!

The charging light was indeed on, but I'm pretty sure the screen was not on at the same time before. Is the screen supposed to be on when the 12v is being topped up ? Seems odd.

I could be mistaked which is why I asked.

I noticed the blue flashing charge light behind my windscreen yesterday evening, I purposely checked the dashboard, and it was illuminated just like your picture. I suppose as the systems in the car are awake the dashboard also comes to life for the charge duration. I checked later after the blue light had stopped flashing and the dashboard was no longer illuminated.
