WINDOW TINTING ADVICE NEEDED

8345 Views 39 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  Hsiaotsu
I have an I5 Limited that I was going to have the windshield and front windows tinted at 70% to cut down on UV. Then I saw this 'Driver Assistance System' chart in another post explaining the 'Detecting Sensors' and it states, "Never install any accessories or stickers on the front windshield or tint the front windshield". Should I forget having the windshield tinted? Does the U.S. I5 Limited have Solar Glass installed, I checked the window sticker, and it is not listed? Any advice would be appreciated.

I had my Ioniq 5 tinted with Llumar FormulaOne Stratos with 70% on rear windows, sunroof, and windshield. The front side windows are with 15% to match as closely with the factory tint. I can confirm the tint does not affect the HUD. I can see fine when driving at night. Also, there is no change in the sensors. Another brand option I was considering was Xpel XR Plus.

Can you take a picture of the tint on the windshield?
I'm wondering about the portion where the rear camera/front camera for lka sits.

Did they tint the little portion going up to the camera?

If you tint your front window what do you do with any registration or inspection stickers that must go on the front window

Guess it depends on the state. We don't have registration or inspection stickers that go on the front window. 😊

Move to a different state. :D

They should be tinting the inside of the windshield not the outside/

Although tints are recommended to be on outside of curved surfaces. Of course it depends on extent of curvature. Slight curves like vehicle windows shouldn't be a problem, but not so sure about windscreens.

You can use sticker shield or whatever they are called that can make a sticker reusable.

In NY they go on the inside
For those of you who have had the windshield tinted at 70% or 80%, how is the visibility at night?

Can't even tell there's a tint at night. It's more noticeable during the day because sometimes you see a rainbow glare.

I’ve done ceramic tint at 80% on windshield and I noticed the car is darker overall and is more noticeable at night. Personally I’m not a fan of it. Also, every tiny film has a reflectivity percentage. Interior light reflections on the windshield aren’t noticeable during the day, but at night you can really see reflections from any interior lights. It’s annoying.
Sorry to revive an old thread.

Would window tint affect the driving range? I am debating between regular tint and ceramic tint (blocks more solar heat).

On my ICE cars, I used ceramic tint to better reduce the summer heat coming into the car. For an EV, it seems like you actually want to do 2 completely opposite things-- reduce the solar heat in the summer and increase the solar heat in the winter. If the car is slightly warmer in the winter, that is less load on the battery to heat the cabin. Thoughts?

If it matters, my i5 has Phantom Black paint and cooks in the sun anyway.
If the Driver Assistance System table recommends that the front windshield should not be tinted, it is best to follow this recommendation to ensure the proper operation of the system. Regarding the availability of solar windows, it is worth contacting the dealership or the manufacturer directly for clarification. They will have the most accurate information regarding the specifications of your vehicle. It's best to reassure yourself and stick to the manufacturer's recommendations. Feel free to explore other options, such as UV-blocking curtains for side windows, which you can view at https://snapshades.com/. Stay informed, and I wish you the best of luck.

Just use the tint you want. I have ceramic and it does not effect anything.

Tinting is usually done on the inside, so any tint would not covering the camera or sensor, correct?

Most everybody put on window tints because they look how it looks. The windshield cuts ~97% of UV radiation (which is why your self-darkening sunglasses do not darken inside the car). Windshield tints do NOT reduce UV at all - not matter what the installers claim. :sneaky:

It’s not just about UV and VLT. It’s also about IR. Heat rejection is probably the most important aspect of getting tint besides looking cool.
I live in Minnesota and there are lots of tinted windows here that have nothing to do with heat rejection. :)
