Road noise

The road noise from the Ioniq is clearly evident by this photo of the BEV version which should be more or less the same with the hybrid models. The lack of sound deadening/soundproofing material is clearly shown, there's essentially two small pieces and nothing else.
I have to believe several hundred pounds extra of battery between passengers and the road add significant noise reduction over the hybrid.

Here's an interesting picture I found. I'm assuming this is an Ioniq Hybrid...but it gives you an idea of what can be done.
In fact it is a picture of a non North American 2017 Ioniq HEV. Nice find. Doesn't look like it adds a lot of weight so great modification! As long as you don't care about a spare tire. I'd be interested in doing it myself.

I was curious about the outside location too. In much older cars, vendors like Zeibart added coating to the underbody and wheel wells for rustproofing with the added benefit of noise reduction. But now manufacturers do that. More coating would change the frequency or amplitude of noise reduction, but it could be a challenge getting something to stick to the OEM coating.

Seems like a lot of work . Do you find the Ioniq that noisy ? In all honesty I don't find road noise too much of a problem at all ,though some road surfaces are noisier than others . It's certainly no noisier than any other car I've owned . Maybe Hyundai should bring out an EV Hover variant ? ;)
Are luxury cars quieter? Why do people buy them or attempt to reduce noise in non-luxury cars? Might be a lot work, but far cheaper than buying a luxury car.

so am I puzzled

My Ioniq is the quietest car I have ever owned?

even better once you get rid of the noisy Michelin energy saver tyres :)
More quiet is more better. You actually agree since you like car better with quieter tires. One thing about environmental noise is there is an impact on everyone, even those who do not consciously notice. Quiet homes and cars and work benefit the poor just as much as the rich.

Look closer, there should be insulation under the hood. A thin black sheet was installed in the 2017 and 2018 model years. You also have an engine cover, firewall insulation, and extra cost windshield with sound insulation.
