Morning warm up....How does it work?

EV Owners, please let me know how the morning warm up works. It's an odd function if it works the way I think it does. I know the car has to be plugged in for it it to work. But, does the car have to be actively charging? I assumed plugged in, not charging, it would still function, but this AM I may have found that is not the case. There was a glitch in my schedule app and that may be the cause but I am not sure. The Owners manual just says says "plugged in".

I try to charge at 10%-20% battery to full to keep it conditioned and I do not mind keeping the car plugged in and not charging for this function. I also want to track electrical charging consumption. I would hate to have to charge from an 80% battery to full and potentially sacrifice battery longevity for a defrosted windshield. There is a work around that I could schedule charging to "start" at the same time as I want morning warm up.......

We had our first heavy frost this AM and that electric defrost worked fantastic! The ice was gone in a minute or two from the start but I had to do with without the schedule function.

Thank you!

I have set a scheduled preheating, e.g. every work day at 8am. When the car is plugged in, this heating works. I don't know when it actually starts, because the set time is for departure. And yes, the preheating works independently from charging - even when the car is not charging the preheating will kick in.

But I don't know how to start preheating manually, e.g. just before I want to go somewhere unplanned. I can't use a bluelink for this because Hyundai doesn't sell it in my country.

Toasty this AM. I made an error though. I had it set for 7:00 AM and 2:30 AM (Should have been 2:30 PM). So my car was nice and warm for nobody. But it did work well. I ended up setting up and allowing it to charge last night on low current and slow charging from 45% battery.

I'm in the USA and have Bluelink. The scheduling function on Bluelink did NOT work, but doing it in-car works. Scheduling climate causes it to come on about 20min before time to go (car sits in my ~40-50* garage) and draws about 700w. If the car is unplugged it does not come on. It also overrides charge settings, so when I have a 2200-0600 charge time set, the car will still pre-heat climate at 7:30.

Triggering an ad hoc climate event via Bluelink works fine, when it works, and it doesn't have to be plugged in.

Bluelink sucks.

I agree, I had to schedule through the car. Blue link is very unreliable and slow and schedule changes do not happen. I hope for a better app. This morning mine sucked down 1 KW of power for the warm up (37 outside to 80 inside). That was worth $0.19 cents! The other day it was 40 and I warmed to 73, it used 790 Watts. I try to go warmer so I do not need to run any heat on my 8 mile commute.

Still kinda warm here, and I haven't used preheating. But if it is like my previous EV (Leaf), then it should start heating 30 minutes before the departure time and it should preheat no matter if the car is plugged in or not, charging or not. Don't know how Bluelink works or if we actually have coverage in this country for this service.

If you are on a cheap night time electricity tariff, you might want to schedule the departure time for when your tariff switches to day rate. This morning, my 2018 Ioniq was plugged in and preconditioned. I checked the graph on my Powervault app and at 06:15 it drew 4 kW for 30 minutes. When I went to the car an hour later, the windows were still clear and the interior was comfortable. My night tariff ends at 07:00 which is quite convenient.(Temp set to 23 C)

I’m interested to know If we can get more winter range by scheduling charging so it finishes just before leaving. Would the 7kw charger heat the battery by a significant amount and would this heating bring the battery up to summer temperatures.

Hi all,

My question is a more general question not limited to the scheduled warming function specifically. Can the seat warmers and rear defrost be set to come on? On the Bluelink app, I see it has settings for Temperature and front defroster, that's it. What about seat warmers and rear defrost?

I have noticed with the seat warmers that if I have them on and shut off the car and then come back and start the car, the seat warmers are no longer on. Is there a way to change that?

By the manual info, Rear Defrost & Seat Warmers must be turned on manually. Both are on a 30 Min Timer, (As Best I recall, don't have the manual handy), and reset to off when the vehicle is switched out of run.

Ha, I think hyundai are still building cars in the traditional sense, a tesla would definitely just work when unplugged. But then we don't have vampire drain. However after 72k mikes in the ionic I would say the most annoying things are:
No battery pre conditioning
No remote monitoring of charge (in the uk)
Traction control on the ionic is so stupid, coming from a tesla with microsecond control over the motors and then driving the silly ionic which backs of the power completely, upsetting the cars balance, it's just old fashioned.
Don't get me started on going over a bump stopping the regen or coming down a hill and then onto the flat where the throttle curve is backed off for 2-3 seconds before you can go... Really dangerous at junctions...
And then the LCAS that actively tries to drive the car off the road when going round a right hand bend but not a left.
Annoyingly all the things could be fixed in software but only tesla seem to want to do updates to features.
I suppose we are just buying a traditional car with a new drivetrain.

I have tried Climate Turn On Once. Seems like(as best I remember) I also received some strange message about it not working. I updated the vehicle status review and noted the Climate and windshield Defrost was showing as on. When I got in the car the climate control display was off, when I started the car it showed the status and set point I had sent. The previous status on shutdown was off and the temp setting was lower. It may be worthy of note that the remote functions require the vehicle to have good cell reception for the data modem.
