Key fob locked inside

I put my golf bag in the trunk. It happened to have my key fob and phone inside the bag. I closed the trunk and the car immediately locked. Key fob and phone both inside! Unbelievable!!!
Dealer couldn’t help, other key with my wife who was not available. Finally downloaded app on somone’s phone and fortunately remembered my password. This car is over engineered. Anyone else have this problem?

I believe there’s a warning in the manual that this can happen if you only open the trunk & not unlock the car.

I have done same thing when opening trunk to put groceries in without unlocking car first (trunk unlocks independently of doors). Fortunately my wife was standing next to me with her key.

Great idea to use another’s phone!

reminds me once in college in the early 2000’s, I opened the trunk of my Accord and put the keys down to put bags in. I remember closing the trunk and realizing in slow motion my keys were still lying on the trunk mat. Fortunately a locksmith was able to come by relatively quickly to get me sorted.
Thank you, TRT. That’s very informative. It makes sense. My wife says her Subaru trunk would do the same thing. But her car doesn’t have a “smart” key. The Hyundai car and key are in communication somehow. I don’t think the car should lock by itself with the key inside?
I have been generally disappointed by the electronics of the car and the screen interface. I miss buttons and tactile knobs. Driving is however great.
This is not possible on my Norwegian car, it beeps and the doors unlock (but mirrors stay folded in). Do you have a 3rd party alarm installed by the dealer that over riding the car system?

True for the door but try leaving the keys in the hatch/boot - it will close and lock.

Used smart boot opening (doors remained locked), had my keys in my jacket and put it in the boot with the shopping. Closed the boot but the car beeped and all doors were unlocked.

No 3rd party alarm. It’s a 2022 AWD SE. The issue may be that the hatch area doesn’t detect the key.

Same thing with mine. Locked the doors, put the fob in the back, but as soon as I closed the hatch, the car beeped and all four doors unlocked. The hatch also unlocked.

There may be a difference between locking the doors then proceeding to close the hatch, and arriving at a locked car and then unlocking the hatch only.

On all the cars that I had that were equipped with this feature (unlocking/locking of the hatch or trunk only, without unlocking the doors), there was a risk of locking the fob inside the car's luggage area.

I guess this is because most cars do not have a sensor in the rear luggage area to detect the presence of a fob.

I just did the test again, there is no difference. The car was locked overnight for at least twelve hours. I opened the hatch, put the fob in, and as soon as I closed the hatch, the car beeped and unlocked all four doors. I then did the first test again, with the same result. Maybe it's a US/Canada difference? Or different trims?

I think it’s the trim level, the OP has a SE which I think doesn’t have the powered tailgate. Maybe the key fob sensor is included with the powered tailgate but not with the manual tailgate?

I actually had this problem with my 2017 Chevy Bolt where I locked my phone AND keyfob in the trunk. After taking a few deep breaths (I did freak out a bit), I remembered that I had my Apple Watch and it had the cheesy app on it. I unlocked it with the cheesy app on my watch. So, I made sure to add Hyundai's cheesy app on my watch when we got the car.
BTW, the key app is not available in Europe.... :(

Thank you Buenospot. Apple Watch- great idea. that’s a way for me to avoid getting locked out. Still shouldn’t be that complicated.

No, that's underengineering. I would call it an engineering faceplant, and I'm an engineer.

Right on!

I like cheese, and cheesy too.
