Issues Charging at Public ChargePoints since getting home Chargepoint installed

Hi folks - hoping some of you can help, as ChargePoint couldn't figure it out. I recently had a home ChargePoint hard wired by a Hyundai-certified installer. Works great. But I'm on vacation on an island with a public Chargepoint that I've used previously and successfully with this specific Ioniq. However, that was before the home charger. Now, when I go to plug in to the ChargePoint station after tapping my phone and initiating payment, the handshake from the station to the vehicle fails and my car states 'Charging Unsuccessful.' There isn't any scheduled charging enabled on my Hyundai app. I just can't figure out what is going wrong, and would appreciate any advice here -- otherwise I won't be getting home anytime soon. Thanks!

Have you considered the charger may be the issue? Many CP public charger hosts don't pay the maintenance contracts, and if they are losing money on the charger, don't sweat it when they stop working.

Try elsewhere. I can't think of any reason having a home charger would impact public charging.

That makes sense, except this charger seems to be working perfectly, and worked for me fine just a month ago when I last visited here. And I've seen several vehicles charging at it. The handshake with my particular vehicle doesn't seem to be working. I will try another ChargePoint on a neighboring island, but feel like it will just happen again?

Any info on the charger screen or the app? I tend to think it's most likely some sort of payment issue, but if it was, that should generate some sort of message on the charger. Perhaps when the installer set it up he did something to your account? Just guessing here.

Hi all - I appreciate the thoughts here. Since originally posting, I've now visited a total of three ChargePoint stations and the same thing is happening. No issues with the station, but the ChargePoint won't 'talk' to my vehicle. I've checked my app and the ChargePoint app and can't figure out what is wrong. I've also spent hours on the phone with both ChargePoint and Hyundai support. Any additional ideas on what is happening?

I'd be curious about the home charging, too now. But I suppose you'd have said something if that quit working too.

I think I'd try calling CP while at one of their chargers to see what they see on their end. I suspect that the installer left you with one account for home and one for DCFC and you don't have both in your phone or some weird thing like that.

We had 2015 tesla S...nacs, of course, like you?...and it had an issue with the data connection pins...on that car the data cable is separate from the charging leads...try a close inspection of the "little holes" for corrosion or dirt...when the tesla's connection went haywire I could force it to function by torque-ing it when plugged in, pushing the cable end forward and observing the color codes...the plow- connector pins were corroded...fixed it by using "plow connector" tools, of which there are tons online...somewhere on this site I posted a pic of the connector/cable re: hyundai going to nacs and this possible problem...In some form or another this is a component of the NACS design.

found it...this pic shows the corrosion. This unit plugs into the back of the NACS port, and from outside, looking into that port, you'd see the 3 pins. At the time I thought it looked like the pins were rhodium-plated...white-ish. The plow connector tool kits are about $50. We traded in the Tesla a few months later having had no recurrence of that problem...seduced by the 6 (partly).

Your home ChargePoint is level 2. The problems you are having, are they with DC fast charging? If yes, then you are talking about a different problem. Check your EV settings for DC fast charging. Make sure they haven’t been accidentally botched up.

Given your symptoms, I'd suggest you initiate charging in a way that does not involve your ChargePoint account, at least as a workaround. (Especially if you got the $400 ChargePoint credit from Hyundai, you definitely want this fixed in the long term, though.) There are several ways to do this:
  • You can use a credit card to start charging at most (maybe all) ChargePoint stations.
  • ChargePoint roams with a large number of other networks, including EVgo, BP Pulse, Shell Recharge, Flo, and several others. You can use one of their accounts to initiate charging. (I've done this only once, just to test, with an EVgo card. It worked fine.)
  • Create a second ChargePoint account with a second e-mail address and use that to initiate charging.
You said that you've used this same station with the same car in the past, so presumably you know what you're doing with adapters; however, if I've misunderstood your post, or for the benefit of others who may read this thread, be aware that the 2025 Ioniq 5 comes with two adapters, and they are not interchangeable. I've seen several reports of people who try to use the larger CCS1-to-NACS adapter at Level 2 (J1772) stations, but these attempts are doomed to failure. To charge at a J1772 station, you must use the J1772-to-NACS adapter. If you don't know the difference between these adapters, see this video:
