Ioniq5 doesn't want to go into Drive

Hello,

We occassionally have the issue that our Ioniq5 doesn't want to go into drive. If I then exit the car, close it, go in immediately and try again, I keep having the same issue. If I wait for 15 minutes and try again, it will work again.

I have read about the accessory mode, but I don't think that's the problem we have. It feels like only happening if I'm in a hurry and somehow at the same time (or so) hit the break and the Start button. It doesn't recognize the break anymore.

Anyone else the same problem and/or a solution that is better than waiting 15mins?

More details about the car if needed:
Ioniq 5 EV E0a
Balance Solar AWD
Year 2021

Thx E

1. You may wish to include more details about your vehicle such as year, trim, etc., to help. Features (and problems) vary from model year-to-model year.
2. I do know that in the US, 2025 Ioniq6 will not shift out of Park after charging with the car and HVAC running. You have to turn off the vehicle and turn back on again…no need to wait any time though. Software in your country could very well work differently. Don’t know, but the 2025 Ioniq5 might work the same way.

Sounds like something for your dealer’s service department to troubleshoot. If you solve the issue, please share the resolution.

Thanks for your swift reply and for the tip to add some specs. I added this to the original post too:

Ioniq 5 EV E0a
Balance Solar AWD
Year 2021

Now, stop starting without delay doesn't work, unfortunately...

And the problem is since the beginning, so the software updates that are done so far didn't solve the issue.

And the dealer doesn't know how to fix it, unfortunately.

Love how the car looks and drives, but I also had the charging issue (fixed now), so my next one will most probably be off a different brand I'm afraid.

Rushing is often the cause. Press start then wait a moment before engaging gears.

There are a few modes the car can be in based on various conditions.

If you get in and press start without your foot firmly on the brake pedal, it will go into accessory mode, and won't go into gear.

If you have the car running and plug in to a charger, it goes into a similar mode to accessory.

If you start it properly and hit start again, it goes into accessory more.

Generally, putting your foot on the brake and hitting start again will put it in ready mode, you should then be able to put it in gear...with your foot on the brake again.

Thanks for the explanation!

Only... The lqst one is where it goes wrong... probably into Zombie Mode as most refer to on the fora I now read. It seems to be a bug which still doesn't seem to be solved, but here is a work-around that is said to be working:
  • shut down car
  • get out and lock it
  • use app to climatize car
  • once aircon starts - open, get in, start and drive away

I've seen no mention of the READY light. Is it on when this happens? I can't imaging it being on with the car not actually ready to drive. If the light is off, that's your indication that the car is not ready and is most likely in accessory mode due to hitting the start button before the brake pedal sensor is triggered. It's pretty common in the EV and hybrid world.

the ready sign indeed is off. But the problem is that you can’t get out of the accessory mode. That’s online referred to the Zombie mode, which still seems to be a bug which they can’t fix.

Must be an EU thing. If I press the power button without my foot on the brake, it clearly goes to accessory mode and says so very prominently on the instrument cluster.

If I press the power button again with my foor off the brake, it looks like ready mode, but there's a "key in car" indicator and no ready indicator. Is that what they are calling zombie mode? I've never seen that reference.

If I press the power button a third time with my foot off the brake, the car shuts off.

Once I've finished that cycle, I can start the car normally.

I didn't experiment to see what effect it had to put my foot on the brake while pressing the power button when partway through the cycle. I suppose that might complicate things.
