I learned about this acronym ICE about car when start researching about hybrid car.

AFAIK, ICE can means Internal Combustion Engine or In-Car Entertainment.

What intrigued me is the term "Internal" Combustion Engine, aren't all vehicles having engine internally? Is there ever a popular "external" engine for vehicle ever being used?

Internal combustion engine = combustion of fuel takes place withing the power component (cylinder), eg, petrol or diesel engine, also rocket and jet engines.
External combustion engine = combustion of fuel takes place outside the power component, eg steam engine, steam turbine..
