Implementation of scheduled charging/heating (via Bluelink)

Hi everyone,

So the good news is, it seems that scheduled charging and heating works to some degree (it never used to work for me before the last update), and the climate control does trigger whilst the car is plugged-in and charging - however I noticed that this is how it works (example: the battery is not fully charged but not that low SOC, with a departure time set at 7am:

  • Car starts charging (for me it was around 3am)
  • Car completes charging (around 6am)
  • Car frequently starts/stops charging every few minutes up to 6:50am (it's already at desired target SOC) and then the climate control starts at 6:50am
  • Car finishes charging and CC at 7am
So overall it works, but to me it would have made more sense if the car could instead work out (maybe by pulling a small amount of charge) the power that the charger can deliver, and then calculate when (roughly) it should start charging in order for the charging to start at a more suitable time so that there can be just one charge session.

As a result of the current implementation, I got multiple pings from Bluelink during the very early morning of charging start/completion (I choose to have Bluelink override overnight DND on my phone so that in case there's anything important I'll hear/see it).

In addition, my concern is that if the SOC was lower and the car still started to charge at 3am, the car may not have reached my desired SOC by the time I left - full diclosure, I haven't had the chance to test that scenario.

Interested to know the opinions/thoughts of others on this - I mean it works which is great, but in reality this implementation doesn't seem that senisble/efficient to me. Also it would be great if we can just schedule the CC and plug the car in without needing to schedule an unnecessary charge.

Thanks all!

Adam

Notifications can be turned off under - Utilities (sand which symbol) - Setup (cog wheel) in Bluelink. That will solve being alerted in the night. As for not being at full charge you will need to calculate when to start charging to insure always having the SOC you desire. You can use the following

Hours needed = (End State - SOC) / Charge rate

here is an example

Hours = (80%X77.4KW - 20%X77.4KW)/7.2KW/h = 6.45 hours

assuming 77.4 KW battery and 7.2KW level 2 charger. Modify for your conditions.

so if you never have the SOC below 20% and you want 80% SOC every morning then scheduling charging at least 6.45 hours before departing will confidently get you off every morning with your intended charge. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice about the notifications, that's a good idea!

With regards to the calculations - I set the departure time so supposedly the car is meant to do this :-( I mean personally I thought this was the point of scheduling a departure

Otherwise I don't have a way of doing it since I don't think my charger has the functionality to set up delayed charging - but if possible, I'd rather have the car manage this for me than have to do my own calculations (lazy I admit :) )

Both systems work for me (separately).
I have my charging set to start just after midnight and finish at 6am. This is more than enough and the car stops charging at the point it reaches the target % (80 or 100%).
I don't generally need the climate pre-conditioned, but on very cold days I start the climate remotely using Bluelink when I wake up. After half an hour the car is absolutely warm enough, and I don't usually leave the house until 1 hour after getting up. Plenty of time.
So charging scheduled in car - climate manual via Bluelink.
I have my departure set at 9am everyday for no particular reason, it's just a random time that enables me to set the scheduled charging between midnight and 6am.

That's a good approach - my only reason for using the scheduled climate was that I thought that if the car isn't charging at the time when climate goes on, the battery gets used to power the heaters rather than mains - not a big deal I guess as it's only on for 10 mins, but if you're going on a long trip and want to maximise range then you'd potentially want the mains used for this
