The solar roof available for some versions of the Ioniq 5 is indicated as being the same as for the Sonata Hybrid. This would mean specifications like 204 Wp (here the unit Wp is Watt peak, which is the maximal power level in Watt it can deliver) based on cells with 22.8% efficiency, which is quite high. For the Sonata, based on Korean statistics it is estimated to provide an advantage in efficiency of about 7% or free extra driving distance per year of 1300 km. This can be a bit more when the car is parked for 24 hours a day outside.

If these numbers translate well to the Ioniq 5, the 7% would mean that for example, on average a range of 450 km could become more than 480 km. Of course, this also depends on how intensively the car is used: less intensive means a relatively higher %, more intensive means a relatively lower %. In addition, it depends on climate circumstances that may differ from Korea.

For example, in the Netherlands, a solar panel of 200 Wp is expected to deliver at most 0.2 times 1000 kWh = 200 kWh per year. When it is positioned flat this will provide a reduction of about 15%, so then the car can produce about 170 kWh per year. If you drive by 8 km/kWh (= 12.5 kWh/100km), this gives about 1400 km per year, which is about the same as estimated for the Sonata.

In Germany, the solar roof of the Ioniq 5 of someone produced more than 2 kWh on one day; see here.

We have to keep in mind that the 7% increase in range for the Sonata Hybrid is 7% additional charge to a very small hybrid battery, and doesn't translate into a 7% increase to the large EV battery for the Ioniq 5. I would expect about the same 1300 km added range total for the year in the best conditions, with significant reduction in most everyday usage.

#4 ·
I don't think they estimate the 7% only for the electric part of the driving but for the MPG of the overall driving.

In another Ioniq 5 forum, there was a question about the space in the Ioniq 5. The picture from Hyundai below shows how space is divided, with priority for space for the front and rear passengers. If the proportions in this picture are correct, then roughly estimated the floor behind the rear seats is about 1 meter long and with rear seats down behind the front seats, it is about 2 meters long.

Some news about the batteries of the Ioniq 5 from Etnews from Korea (in the context of bidding for the Ioniq 7 batteries):
It is reported that SK Innovation is participating in the bidding process with its NCM9½½ (90% nickel, 5% cobalt, 5% manganese) batteries. Hyundai Motor Company’s primary production of EV batteries for Ioniq 5 involves SK Innovation’s NCM811 batteries. SK Innovation is also looking to supply its NCM9½½ batteries to Hyundai for Ioniq 7 as well.
This explains more about SK Innovation's NCM811 battery for the Ioniq 5 and the trend to high Ni batteries:
SK Innovation is planning to develop an electric vehicle (EV) battery that uses 98% nickel, TheElec learned on Tuesday. The South Korean energy giant has recently finalized a road map up to the year 2030 to develop next-generation batteries that dramatically increase the portion of nickel. The company will also launch a battery with zero cobalt. SK Innovation’s NCM811 (nickel, cobalt and manganese in around 8 to 1 to 1 ratio) batteries have nickel slightly over 80%. The company’s NCM9½½ batteries, meanwhile, have around 88% nickel. SK Innovation is planning to begin mass production of these in 2023. The goal by 2030 is to increase nickel portion to 98%. From the below picture given the 160 cm height, ground clearance seems to be about 16 cm (I read somewhere like 17 cm, but I cannot find it back).

From here:

From IONIQ-5-Teknisk_25-02-21.pdf I see the stated expected consumption for 19 "and 20" wheels;

Long Range RWD
19 "16.8 kWh / 100km
20" 17.9 kWh / 100km

Long Range AWD (4x4)
19 "17.7 kWh / 100km
20" 19.0 kWh / 100km
The First Edition will have 20" and AWD while the regular versions that can be ordered in summer will have 19" and the option for only RWD. So, there may be an efficiency advantage of not having the First Edition of 12%, which is a lot. It can be a difference in range of up to 50 km.

Both RWD and AWD had higher consumption with 20" wheels. Why?

I think it is both the rolling resistance and wind resistance of the larger tires. There is more rubber contacting the pavement and a greater tire profile and wheel rim that has to cut the wind. The tires make up a surprisingly large percentage of the car's total wind and rolling resistance. I am guessing 20% or 30%. Also the wheels would be heavier.

These are good questions - I don't know if I made the reservation list, but I wish I knew a little more.
The OTA updates are a biggie. I'm sure there'll be some - but will it be able to update all systems - brake/one pedal feel, driver aids (HDA etc), not just infotainment/maps. And will they actually send out enhancement or just minor fixes.

#25 ·
For any current Hyundai owners - how well does the 'HDA2' (or HDA) work?
I've read the discussions on the two lane keeping systems - VW id.3 is similar in that regard. Simple verison is more camera/bouncing, higher spec version is quite good at keeping centered.

I've seen videos and a detailed hyunda site which goes through the technology - but it's not clear what portions work on just mapped highways (motorways in UK, A roads perhaps) or all. Some may only be relevant to korea?

Needless to say I'm trying to draw comparisons to Tesla autopilot as well as the Vw id.3 as those are the other cars I'm considering ...

@Jan Treur, are there any images showing the color choices you had for both the exterior and interior? I am wondering if the white interior shown by Hyundai in their promotion images is called “light grey.” It looks beautiful, but I don’t want a white interior that would require so much cleaning. I am hoping there is something in between white and black.

This was the other, dark option, called Full Black. But these are only the options for the First Edition. For the next versions after the First Edition, there will be many more options.
