First time fast charging

We’re having our garage floor redone so I made a stop at a fast charger to top off while the floor cures. I used the Chargepoint app to locate a fast charger in network, as I have a $400 credit with them that’s burning a hole in my pocket.

I plug in and touch my Chargepoint RFID card and it won’t charge. I tried the other side and same thing. I swipe my debit card and Voila! Success. Kinda.

It was really fast and went from 30% to 80% in 17-18 minute. Started at 203 and went down to 150. Cost $34.

I’m not sure why it didn’t work with the rfid card. I didn’t think of going through the CP app; next time I will.

All in all a successful experience even if it cost more than I expected.

The photo looks like an EVgo charger not a Chargepoint. We don't have EVgo chargers around around here so I've never used one but there are lots of Chargepoint sites. I've always found the RFID the easiest way to activate a charge at Chargepoint. It does work with some other networks but I am not sure which ones.

Most definitely an EVgo charger in the picture.

@Designby My rule of thumb when using app or RFID to start a session is to authenticate before plugging in, this may be even more important on EVgo due to the AutoCharge functionality they support. The only time I plug in first is when using a credit card.

Yup! That's an EVgo charger. The CP app shows lots and lots of chargers and not all are CP. Use the Plugshare app.

When I got my Bolt, I got a $500 EVgo credit. That credit worked fine with Chargepoint. I just had to start the charge at the CP charger with my EVgo app or RFID card and CP pulled the payment from my EVgo account whether the EVgo charger was stand alone or at at PFJ truckstop.

Sadly, the opposite doesn't seem to be true. On our recent road trip, I used EVgo chargers at PFJs around the country and I was never able to start the session with the CP app or rfid card.

I did, however use CP credits at several Ionna chargers, and a couple EVconnect chargers. I also used it to start a charge at a municipal non-networked charger that turned out to be free.

One good thing about those PFJ chargers, though besides the Autocharge+ is that they almost always work and are among the fastest. But you pay for it.

It does look like you should be able to start it with the card, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will use your CP account for payment. One would think so, but I never got it to work. Maybe there's a glitch they still need to work out?
