Day 1 - a bloody rattle

I hate rattles in cars. I collected my Ionic 5 Premium this morning, drove it the 12 miles home and all was well. Very impressed. I got my day’s work done and I thought I’d take the new car out for a run round the local lanes. I spent about an hour setting everything up and loading the carrier bag of miscellaneous car bits that I’d taken out of my old car yesterday into the Ionic.

No sooner do I get going and there’s a damn rattle coming from the boot. Marvellous. My first thought was that it must be something I’d put in or moved about in that underfloor area. I’ve progressively removed things until there is nothing in the boot at all and the rattle is still there. I’ve even taken out the parcel shelf thing and the false floor itself. I don’t think it is coming from the back seats or the seatbelts, so I’m at a bit of a loss.

I’m sure it wasn’t there on the way home this morning but I don’t see what I could have done to introduce it. I can’t be having this on a brand new car so it looks like I’ll be taking it back tomorrow!

That was one of my first thoughts having experienced this on my first test drive. Neither of them appear to be twisted and I’m sure the rattle is coming from further back.

I’ve just had to go out and disable the “advanced intruder alarm” in the settings of the car as the alarm has gone off twice in the last hour for no apparent reason. It’s not turning out to be a very good first day.

Just to be sure I’ve just been for a quick whizz round the block with both the outer rear belts plugged in. No change sadly.

Earlier I literally stripped the boot and its contents so I’m sure it’s none of those causing it. I‘ve just been having a prod around at anything that could move about and all I can really find is on each side of the tailgate there is a rubbing strip. These will move about and they make a noise a bit like the rattle I’m getting when I do so by hand.

You have my sympathy @Silverage I hate rattles too.
Is it possible to get some else to drive it while you sit in the back to narrow it down? Rattles have an annoying habit of pretending to come from somewhere different to their actual location due to the internal acoustics.
My other half and I have had several "it's you side", "no, it's your side" type conversations while driving which usually end up in one of us thumping on the dashboard/central console/ door cards.
We have a really annoying one in our ENero which is in the drivers door, intermittant, and only does it when the window is fully closed.

I've just called the dealer and they were very sympathetic (and not too surprised). We've arranged for me to take it back a bit later and they'll diagnose it. I'm sure it's not a loose piece of trim as I've literally had everything that will come out, out.

This is the curse of quiet electric cars of course. You notice every sound.

I’m just back from the dealers and I’m pleased to say the rattle is no more.

Their tech knew from my description almost straight away what was causing it so I don’t think this was his first rodeo. We had a quick run out so he could hear it for himself. We were both in agreement about the curse that is lane assist.

When we got back he applied some madly expensive lubricant to the rubber bushes on each side of the tailgate and that was it sorted. He says it is quite common for these to harden and then they rattle against the body of the car. I had a serene drive back with just the sounds of nature playing softly in the background.

Top marks to my local dealer for a speedy resolution of the problem.

I too suffered from the dreaded rattles just after putting a dozen miles on the clock of this otherwise very civilised car. i took a quick look around the rear end and opened the boot lid. There to find the culprit. I had released the spring loaded luggage screen, loaded the boot with all the gubbins from my trade in buggy and forgotten to secure the screen properly at the end.... Ends clipped securely in place..... Silence reigned!
Just getting used to Far Eastern Technologies and some curious Amber alerts appearing in the dash screen from "Check Front Collision warning' to" Check Lane departure Warning" They all came up and promptly disappeared again! The Car ignored the rather vulgar display as I did when it happened again a while later. Friends in another Forum assure me that this could be an inherent fault to do with a low sun affected the sensitivity of the so called "driver aids" I can expect that in these brand new models which haven't been calibrated to UK weather/ road and Driver use as yet. But as a 12 year lease over 4 cars partnership with Mercedes Benz' E Class' has just ended, I cannot recall one case of a spurious Amber alert being triggered by any extreme weather conditions.

Tesla model 3 - even worse than the Ioniq for these messages. Everything from blind spot warnings, sensor errors, cameras not working, the list went on. Again, it only seemed to affect RHD cars.

I had a 90 mile return journey last night and noticed a whole new rattle!

Tracked it down today to the new USB A to lightning cable I'd bought rubbing against the side of the centre console thing. I thought they might have made a pass through hole for cables seeing as there is no wireless Carplay but I can't find one.

For anyone still looking for potential rattles, we had one for the last couple months, and finally got the dealer to look at it. The rattle would sometimes go away, and sometimes be much worse than others. As it turns out, gravel from our driveway was somehow getting up on top of the bottom covers. Mechanic was surprised the rocks were getting up there because there was nothing open and/or missing. We drive slowly on the driveway, but the gravel was definitely from there. The sound was all over the right side of the car from front to back.

The Chevy Bolt had the same issue. And some got good results by playing with the bumpers. I put felt under the bumpers and it didn't help.
CHECK the sides of the frame to make sure it is not hitting and chipping the paint. It did on my Bolt.
It was never fixed and GM bought back my Bolt last year.
I sure hope that Hyundai is not going to have all the small issues (and a big battery issue) like the Bolt does.
But the Fast charging rate on a L3 might just be worth it to crank the radio and not hear squeeks ;)

To fix the boot rattle spray some silicone on the left and right side rubber holders (half way down on each side) and then unscrew those bump stops a little bit.
If you just do the bump stops you will end up unscrewing them so much that the gate is going to be super tight and make a nasty sound when opening, or it will just start doing it again...

Now to find the rattle near the passenger side B pillar that's driving me nuts...

Apart from the tailgate (now fixed), I had two other rattles. One was the glove drawer which I’ve applied some silicone to and I have some felt strips on order to go belt and braces on it. My remaining one, like yours, is in the B pillar, but mine is on the driver’s side so it is right by my ear. Actually thinking about I guess your rattle is on the same side as mine - the right side of the car? Passenger side for you but driver’s side for me. I can’t make up my mind whether it is in the seat belt housing or the door/window trim in that area.

I'm also starting to think that's where the vibrations come from. They're not super loud, but they seem to come from a spot quite close to my ear. Weird thing is that sometimes I can completely get rid of it by pushing against the door for a quick second while driving. I did see someone post a picture of jamming a folded piece of paper behind the seat belt hanger. I think it was for a rattle next to the back seat (not the twisted seat belt rattles), but it could have been the same issue. Maybe I'll give that a try.

Had my car in the dealer for paint issues and the B pillar rattle. Again, they lubricated the door seal and hoped for the best. It still rattles 😠

By chance whilst driving Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” started playing on my phone and the rattle went crazy! So I downloaded a tone generator and a 85Hz tone made rattle sound whilst parked.

The rattle in my case was caused by the armrest rattling off of the plastic door card (see attached image). I’ll need to find out how to stop it but at least I now know where it’s coming from. Hopefully others have the same luck.

No armrest problems here but I’ve just been out having a closer look at the B pillar / seatbelt / airbag area. There’s plenty of give in all the trim pieces around there so it’s not surprising a few of them are rubbing together. I’m not sure what the answer is to be honest. I don’t really want to get into disassembly or having pieces of paper poked into it.

Update regarding armrests, mine are now fixed, hope it lasts.
They disassembled both doors, fitted felt tape in between the armrest and the door card and re-assembled, zero noises so far. Car sounds like new again.

However, it seems that it might not even be necessary to fully disassemble it to fix this rattle. 1-2 screws is enough to wedge the tape in there. They said it could be done quicker.
