Coolant Warning

Just started my car and as I drove off got a yellow icon taking up the whole instrument display saying "refill coolant". Couldn't dismiss it from the display, would reappear after a few seconds. Car was serviced 5000 miles ago so should be in good condition.

A few minutes down the road I reached red traffic signals, so I turned off the car while waiting, then turned it on again. Message did not repeat for the rest of the 8 mile journey home.

At home I checked the coolant level. My driveway slopes downwards slightly so coolant was not level in expansion tank but it was well between the low and high levels, slightly nearer high in fact.

Anyone seen this before? Hopefully just a glitch but maybe a sensor going bad?

I have the same symptoms since august. First the warning light came on at seldom times, later it showed more and more often. For last two months the light is constantly lit on. I took the car to service and they said that something is wrong with one of the two cooling pumps - they didn't investigate which one, they ordered both for replacement. I will have replaced them on next thursday. I hope that it will solve the problem because the icon is very annoying - hiding information (e.g. navigaton data) all the time.

I hope the coolant warning problem is now solved for my car. There was some kind of debris in the cooling system. The system has been drained and washed with water and compressed air. The technician said, there had been a fistful of very thick/gelatinous substance.

If I understood correctly, the Hyundai has now this issue in their knowledge base.

I heared at different, unconnected occasion, that this could happen because of mixing different types of coolant. But this was not verified with Hyundai.

Vauxhall Amperas have had a similar problem, message "Service High Voltage Coolant System" message & engine warning lights comes up. Those cars are out of warranty, and it's often a false alarm where the level-sensor clipped to bottom of the plastic reservoir fails. Common fault apparently, but only a Vx dealer can clear this error from the OBDII list so costs $$$ of course. The workaround is to unclip the sensor & bin it, replacing it with a 24 kOhm resistor. This avoids dealer bills, but you just have to keep an eye on the level yourself.
You can see pics & read about it here: Oh no! Just got the 'Service high voltage charging...

Might be worth asking the dealer if the fault you're getting comes from one of these things, and insisting they change the sensor if so. It's a cheap item, and on the Ampera at least it doesn't go into the fluid, so no messy/expensive drain/refill needed.

Ok, so here's the update so far.

I took the car into Hyundai Mansfield yesterday. They confirmed later that day that they had reproduced the fault, bit it was taking longer to diagnose than anticipated. They've kept the car for a second day now, and are completing further diagnostics to identify exactly what has failed. They are going to return the car to me this afternoon (hopefully) then order replacement parts and book it in for 2 days to complete the repair.

I'll try and find out what they conclude has failed and report back here when I do.

Good morning/evening all!
I am suffering exactly the same issue with this Coolant Warning, I have an Ioniq 2020 38KWh.
My unit was in the service center for 10 days and it hasn't be possible to solve the issue. They have flushed the coolant several times, they replaced the high voltage battery and the warning stills show up frequently.

I read all your comments but I want to do the qiestion, Have you gotten the warning resolved?

Thanks in advance.
Alejandro. In Costa Rica.

Hi there,

Ioniq 2020/facelift/30kwh (whatever you want to call it, too many names :D) here, my coolant light triggered for the first time back in december, and at that time, my coolant was, in fact, low.

They filled me up but the light came back up instantly, this time without any visible lost of coolant. They told me that when they will change my battery, they will need to redo the entire coolant loop and that the issue will be gone.

And it did... for a few month. Coolant light came back a few weeks ago, I told them that I think it's just a sensor issue, as clearly the coolant level is good. They told me that the sensor is INSIDE the battery pack, and that when I got a new battery, I also got a new sensor.

Their best guess is that some of the "old" coolant is back and the sensor doesn't like it (why ?).

The car is in the shop today, they will do a full system cleaning twice and we'll see.

Hi TheSpider9319,

ÂżAny update from your dealership?
Mine is being checked this week. Same issue.
They clean the cooling loop, it goes away and a few days later it comes back.
This week I have another apointment, third time they will clean it.
They say that the cleaning procedure it's the official solution from the brand to this problem...
I will call everytime this occurs until I get a final solution.

I see you are from Spain to, where are you located?. I'm from Castellon.

The first time the refill coolant warning came up was in October 2021(Approximately 42,000kms), it would come up regularly and in November the dealer serviced my vehicle but couldn't replicate the fault and asked me to keep an eye on it.
The battery was replaced in December 2021 (47,000kms) - So it's unrelated to the issue.
The second time the refill coolant warning started appearing was in January 2022 (49,000kms), the dealer carried out an 'electronic flush' which cleared the fault
The third time the refill coolant warning started appearing was April 2022 (50,000kms), again the dealer flushed the system and said they had now put in a new special coolant under technical advice from Hyundai
The fourth time the refill coolant warning started appearing was May 2022 (54,000kms), I started insisting the Hyundai replace the vehicle or refund my money, I was forced to return the vehicle for them to attempt to rectify this issue, In August 2022 under technical advice from Hyundai they 'triple flushed the coolant system with hot and cold water'.
The fifth time the refill coolant warning started appearing was just now in September 2022 (60,000kms). The dealer is reporting the issue to Hyundai and looking for technical direction.

Hyundai Australia say the fault is isolated to my vehicle, which clearly it isn't. They also say that each time the dealer has been able to rectify the issue as the fault does not return immediately, so in Hyundai's eyes it's deemed as being repaired.

I'm told the pump rpm is what the car uses to detect the low coolant and when it exceeds a certain value (I believe to be 2,500rpm) it triggers the warning. The car has also had the pumps replaced and several hoses which as per above has not resolved the issue.

I've noticed that the first time the fault appears the vehicle ambient temperature is 21C, the fault starts with an occasional appearance resetting when the car has been off for a long period but it steadily gets worse until it appears every day. For me the fault usually only appears on the second occasion I use the car each day, but then will stay on for the remainder of that day.

I'm now lodging a complaint to Fair Trading in Australia as clearly the vehicle has an issue that cannot be rectified. If you have the same issue with your Ioniq, please get in touch so we can arrange a class action and get this sorted out.

We are having the same issue, I have also written to Hyundai Australia about 10 days ago but not response yet. Our car is still at the dealer fixing the coolant light issue and they claim it will take 3 weeks while they wait for parts(this also includes a recall for the charging port that is giving issues). When I was at the dealer there was another owner that I was talking to who was having the same refill coolant light issues(clearly not an isolated issue) I will private message you.

I have booked my car in for next week. Service department admits it’s not an isolated problem, they have been told officially by Hyundai that different coolant fixes the problem. As others on here have mentioned, this doesn’t fix the problem.

Same issue here. Ioniq EV 38 kWh bought on october 2020. I left the car on the dealer this morning, thankfully the warning appeared today, and they recognized it and were aware of the problem. Fingers crossed...

UPDATE 1: 9/16 I left the car and they told me to go in the afternoon without calling before. I arrive and they tell me that they have not been able to do it as they don't have enough coolant on the dealer. If you don't have enough coolant you should not leave a customer without car for a whole day. They ordered more coolant and will arrive on tuesday. It will take them 2-3 days to change it... This is completely unacceptable, and without offering me replacement car.

UPDATE 2: 9/20 I have left the car at the dealer. Now they said it will be ready on thursday-fridar, 3-4 days so, waiting time starts to increaseand I have just left it. I will probably not get another Hyundai vehicle in the future due to technical service. It happened before in my family 20 years ago, and it goes the same way.

UPDATE 3: 9/22 They have called me early in the morning telling that the coolant was replaced as they called Madrid and they informed them there was a technical bulletin about this problem. They say almost 95% cars run well just doing this , so I expect comming again according to the other comments here .I took the car back and untill now everything seems to be OK.

UPDATE 3: 12/6 While taking a look at the engine bay this weekend, I found that the coolant level was below the minimum mark. The only way I wonder to lower the mark without any leak is evacuating some bubble, so I hope the circuit isnproperly purged. Tomorrow I'm going to the service to top it.

UPDATE 4: 2023/7/6 Oh sh*t, here we go again. The message appeared again yesterday. Just after a few kilometers going to the supermarket, not excesive heat and using A/C. I called to the dealer and they told me they are going to apply the coolant recall, as well as the e-call battery drain recall.

UPDATE 5: 2023/7/18 Both recalls done. Aux battery saver option on the dashboard remains unselectable. Torque App reports 86% 12 Battery SOC, lets see if the car is able to top it up after the update.

UPDATE 6: 2023/8/2 Again. The f***ing message again. Even after the recall. This is embarrasing.

UPDATE 7: 2024/03/11 I have been ignoring the error for a long time since it only makes me lose time. I went to the dealership last week for M4 service and I let them know the issue happened again and they had to perform the campaing. They told me that the expect not to happen again, since they got the flushing machine replaced (I forgot to ask if that was a new machine or a properly working machine). Let's see what happens and if this is the last update.

They changed mine in about 4 hours, but the warning is still here so I'm not sure it did anything.

Today I checked the coolant level (I do it from time to time, since the warning could be a real one for once) and I am indeed below the "min" mark. Going to give them yet another call on monday.

I'm having serious second thoughts about buying my next EV from Hyundai (was thinking Ioniq 6).
