I have been wondering for some time since I first drove an electric car, whether the brake lights come on when you lift your foot off the accelerator. Especially in a BMW I3 and the Ioniq EV with heavy regeneration, the car shows down a lot when you do that. I think then, the light should come on for safety, but I don't know how to test that without using another car driving behind you (and preferably telephonic contact).

Is this maybe specified in the owners manual? Any experiences from other cars?

in the hybrid the brake lights seem to com on when you have 2 or more bars of regen on the left hand display

I have a bridge near me with a long slope down and at night with no traffic behind you can see the brake lights in the barrier
