I was inspired by @IsntItIroniq's post here and @Yardankerty's post here to create my own magnetic phone mount.
I started with an old CD-slot phone mount that I had. I figured it's unlikely that any future car I buy will have a CD slot in which to mount it. I disconnected the base, then sanded it down to not stick out from the back too much. Then I went about attaching magnets to the back.
My first attempt was to use the magnets from another old phone mount, but those magnets weren't strong enough. The phone makes the mount top-heavy, and this magnet couldn't prevent the mount + phone from rotating and letting the phone fall out.
Next I tore apart an old hard drive and used the two neodymium magnets therein. I used Krazy Glue to attach them to the back of the mount. These magnets are plenty strong enough to keep the mount upright.
