5 Months with my IONIQ 5, not fond of it...

Hi everyone,

i got my RWD IONIQ 5 with all options but the AWD system and 20" wheels in Dezember 21 and would like to write my humble review here, of course im complete open minded to opnions but i have to say i'm more disapointed with the car then i thought, and maybe this post can help future owners.
A bit of myself that maybe can help this post's readers to understand my point of view.
Im a fast car lover (alredy onwed AMGs, a heavily modified Golf GTI, Megane RS, Citroen VTR) so im very open minded about manufactures and construction quality, but above that im a family guy and my son was born at the end of 2020 so i needed a bigger car, thats why i decided to go to an SUV, and i can charge my car free of cost thats the reason why i opted for an 100% electric car. And with all that in mind the IONIQ5 was for me the best Cost x Benefit i could find.
I work as a Infotainment software developer for in the Automotive section in Germany that gives me a bit of know-how at some aspects.

Let me start with the good points:
1: Performance: For a 2 Ton+ car and 200+ Horsepower the car has a reasonable performance for overtakes and cruising in Highways, the top speed on the Cluster is limited at 191 Km/h.
2: Confort: The car is extremly confortable and fits perfectly 4 adults and an Isofix 360° turnable Child Seat. The leather seats are great + the panoramic sunroof
3: Charging is really good, at the company that i work there are another electric cars (eTron, eUP, Taycan, Nissan Leaf and others) and in an CCS adapter the IONIQ5 was the 2° fastest at the same conditions
4: The design, i think it is really ahead of its time and a neck breaker (although it reminds me of an PS5 :ROFLMAO:)
5: The AR on the HUD is really nice

Now why this car annoys me with the time:

1: Persistence of configurations on the system:
  • The HUD position are after 3 or 4 new bus cycles reseted, deactivation of the line changing assistence this is not always reproduceable but after i deactivated it, it activated itself again 2 or 3 times by itself.
  • The Bluelink/Profile settings mixed up my configurations with my wifes profile once (i entered the car started it accepting the therms from my profile) and the seat position and colors schemes from my wife were loaded.
  • At media, i deactivated the Media auto start, that works ok since the radio doesnt start automatically but instead the Ambient Sound starts sometimes, its really creepy to enter the car and caffe people talking out of the blue :D (i always use CarPlay), the fact that Wireless CarPlay is not available it also sad.
  • When im alone i listen to loud music, but when im with the little kid it cant be that loud, thats why i activated the confort volume of media, but still sometimes the media starts at the volume 60+ and i ahve to activated it again.
2: The Bose sound system is really disappointing, the back speakers are only set to a fraction of the total volume
3: The availability of reposition parts, i was unfortunatelly in a accident and wait already 3 months (without estimated delivery date) for a headlight, front bumber, left led stripe, bonnet, and some other things) The car drives, but without ACC and left turning signal. (The attention that this car draws on the street with the damage front cant be a good image for Hyundai, a lot of people mostly other IONIQ drives already spoke me on about it)
4: Seatbelt from the back seats are always making noise with the C-Column
5: Auto-Hold shuts itself down, so sometimes when i park the car rolls down a bit just when people are getting out.
6: Why in this world this car doesnt have a rear window wiper? in rainy and snowy days it is impossible to see anything
7: On Sport mode if the media is off, the electric motor causes interference in the front speakers wit a really high pitch noise.
8: The charging port open system is just poorly designed, my wife always have problems opening it as it needs a certain amount of strenght/feeling

Neutral observation: The relax function of the seats are FOR ME useless, is not that confortable for a long time since the leg supports are too short and doesnt go all the way up (I'm 1,90m)

Fact: The negative points of the car are the ones that i have to live with it almost everyday, thats why im disappointed with the car

If i remember anything else i will write it in an topic :D
Want to make clear again, thats my personal opinion. The car doest have any pending updates or recalls, It has ca. 9000km on

I totally agree with you.
I've owned/driven plenty of EVs the last 5 years, and for me Ioniq 5 positions itself around the middle of the "annoying stuff" list among EVs.
Sadly all the EVs I've driven position themself at the bottom of the "all cars" list.
I've had ICE Volvos, Fords, Opels and Mercedes' the last 10 years, and they're nowhere near any EV when it comes to annoying "features", ICE's are just so much better.

Maybe we're requesting too much from EVs because they're more expensive, or maybe the new technology is creating too many new problems? Maybe manufacturers needs to make shortcuts (rattling of seatbelts, no rearscreen wiper) to keep the price more affordable on EVs?

I have no clear answer, but in my book, the Ioniq 5 is one of the best EVs out there, despite the many annoying feats.

I have my RWD from november 2021 and I love it.

I love the sound system, the quiet while driving, the comfort, .... everything. The seat belts don’t make noises with the C-pilar (just turn them), the motor is quiet, I use the parking brake for parking, I open the charge port with the key, the HUD is always there. I don’t miss the rear wiper but it would sometimes be easier to have one.

I have owned a few (8) ICE-cars (mostly Honda) but none was as good as this ev.

The only annoying thing could be the lack of spare parts, but I haven’t had an accident yet!

5: Auto-Hold shuts itself down, so sometimes when i park the car rolls down a bit just when people are getting out.
I often see people complaining about the slight roll when the car is put in park as they assume the auto hold will work.

Does this car have a electronic parking brake? I have seen one in every other vehicle, and that is what you use when you park the car. You would put the car into park while your foot is on the brake, and then while still on the brake engage the electronic parking brake (or axle lock) and the car will not roll.

I would find it odd if this vehicle does not have that. Can someone clarify/correct me please.

Of course it has an electronic parking brake, it has auto hold and it brakes till stop with i-pedal. Auto hold is no parking brake, it only holds the car after you stop with the footbrake while driving.

Yes it does. The difference I think is that a lot of cars with EPB will engage automatically with putting the car in Park, which people are used to and this car doesn't do. Hence the car rolling after it's parked.

I only use the EPB when parking on a slope. On a flat road I just put the car in P(ark) although it automatically goes to P upon shutdown..

Shortage of car/body parts is a problem to any new car model not just the Ioniq 5.

My parking brake auto enables when I turn the car off.
To point 3, I really don't think this is limited to the IONIQ 5, nor Hyundai. This is a world wide supply chain issue. I know someone who got in an accident in September of 2021, and the parts only arrived in March for the repair to take place.

Ugg I would hate to drive my Ioniq 5 looking like that after an accident. I'm already very careful to try to avoid accidents but I'm going to be even more careful now!

Where's the pieces from the car that broke during the accident? Put it all back together. It's a great way to learn some hands-on skills.

So looking back is there another EV you wished you had bought instead? a Tesla? or?
My parking brake auto enables when I turn the car off.
only if you have auto hold turned on does the car automatically apply the parking brake

Thats my problem, my Auto Hold turns itself off, dont know why.

So looking back is there another EV you wished you had bought instead? a Tesla? or?
Q4E und E Tron, Kia Ev6 although its the "same" car, XC40 Recharge and the Polestar 2.

Where's the pieces from the car that broke during the accident? Put it all back together. It's a great way to learn some hands-on skills.
Whish i could do it :D the Headlight cannot be salvaged. DRL and Indicators doesnt work anymore, Headlight and High Beam works but a little downwards.

Shortage of car/body parts is a problem to any new car model not just the Ioniq 5.

Yes of course, not only parts but also electronic components, its a worldwide logistics issue. But still deserves a complain :D

The Auto Hold has different effects depending on how you brake. I have a left hand drive I5 and the left monitor left side botton left is the auto hold symbol. Coming to a stop with a light pressing of the brake the Auto Hold icon will stay white - this means releasing the brake ( without accelerating ) will cause the car to slowing creep. However coming to a stop and depressing the braking further will make the Auto hold icon turn green - this means releasing the brake wont make the car creep anymore . So swapping from light / deeper brake depresses depending on what you want.
I personally can not get enough of my LR RWD 77.3 kw version. I have just booked my car in for a very nice stereo upgrade that will outperform the Bose system once finished:) 19' wheels are perfect, cloth seats super comfortable, did not need all the bells and whistles. Car has really been great over the 6400km to date w decent efficiency
