My car is a 2017 Ioniq Hybrid SEL (US spec), and my phone is an iPhone 7 32GB using the latest software (iOS 12.3.1). I have found that when I plug in my phone to the car that it sometimes it will not charge if Apple Play is activated. This will happen mostly when the charge level on the phone is down a bit from full (I'm not sure exactly how far down). If Apple Play is off the phone will charge regardless of the charge level. I have tried using a different cable and that does not make a difference.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed this problem, and if so have you found a work-around for it (other than turning Apple Play off)? Thanks for your help.
Activated, enabled, same thing. Done thru the menu on the audio system. Yes, there is a battery symbol, it turns green when charging, is white when not charging. No, it's not discharging, but if I come back from somewhere I used the phone and the charge level is down it will not charge in the car if AP is on.
If you were to play music from your iPhone via the USB does your phone show a charge? I am wondering if it can send data and charge at the same time. I have never taken note of that on my phone.
I've had issues in recent iOS versions with both iPhone and iPad not charging even when connected to my computer, and realised that it was locked, and that on the screen a notification briefly said 'unlock to use accessory'.
Unlocking the device allowed it to charge.
If this is your issue, go to settings, general, and the car play, and where your vehicle is shown, tap on that.
The screen for your car will allow you to move car play icons around, but beneath that is 'Allow Car Play While Locked'. Make sure that is on (showing green). If it is off, turn it on and see if that fixes the problem.
The latest iOS has a USB privacy setting that turns off the USB data one hour after last unlock (you can turn this off so data will go past one hour). But this is not supposed to affect charging, just data. No reports of Carplay interfering with charging on other forums (searched Google).
I'm not sure the OP really has a problem as he reports the phone is not discharging. Unless he is toggling Carplay in the car settings every time he plugs in, I don't see how he can see a difference with charging. It might even be possible toggling is the problem and a bug in the Ioniq. Just turn it on and leave it on and see if there is a charging issue.
I think that would be Settings>Touch ID & Passcode, and down the list of options, set USB Accessories to on (showing green) under Allow Access When Locked.
Sure, cables can cause an issue, but not the one described here. Issues are more often caused by lint in the port though. If cable one is working with data and charging as the OP states, it should work with CarPlay as well. If there is a real problem here which I doubt (the OP has gone silent) then the solution lies somewhere else.
DATA = CARPLAY when plugged into the car. OP said he gets CarPlay (data) or charging when plugged in, not both, when the charge of the phone is at a certain level. Nowhere does the OP state that both data and charging are working together when his phone is the particular charge level in question. The problem he is experiencing can totally be down to the cable. Some 3rd party cables may work fine, but for full testing you should always try an OEM cable in order to completely eliminate it as a source of the problem.
I had a good quality Anker cable that worked for quite a while in my previous vehicle. In the Ioniq it kept disconnecting from carplay - which i believe means a quick connect/disconnect that seemed to be happening with bumps. I swapped in another cable and it has stopped doing that. Still, I tried out the Anker cable with other devices and it seems fine. So I'm thinking that maybe some cables have a slightly looser tightness in the Lightning port.
Mine charges reasonably. Still, I wish Carplay worked over BT. I unpaired my phone over BT to avoid long transitions where the phone would connect over BT when starting the car, then when the wire is plugged in, disconnect, which took a minute or two of wait time. If it did support BT, then a higher power charger in a cigarette lighter slot would improve things. Not a dealbreaker if we're charging but I don't quite understand why some cars will do Carplay over BT and ours...won't.
