One of the reasons i went for the IONIQ was that it didn't have the tablet style display, so when i come to upgrade i may have to move to something different

I vote nay for the tablet unit, but it isn't an absolute deal-breaker to me; it's just that I'd prefer the current integrated setup.

I've just driven a Petrol only Kona for a fortnight with the popup tablet unit... I got used to it very quickly.
Just got back in the ioniq and wondered where the screen had gone... Oh down there!
Also I would very much like an ioniq head up display hud!

Sat in a Kona while my car was being serviced and saw the tablet style. I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would so would probably tolerate it. Just happened to look in the central arm rest and there is no usb port there. I wonder where we will dangle our dongles??

I don't like it. At all. But the reason is not the aesthetic of something stuck on the dashboard like a hurried afterthought to copy everyone else, it's that the only reason to have it is that the larger display provides the opportunity for more detail and content on screen - which means more distraction from the business of driving the car safely.

When the entertainment system in a car had nothing more than a tuning knob, a volume control and press-button presets for half a dozen favored stations, there was no need for the slew of warnings about safe operation of the vehicle by keeping eyes and focus on the road.

with previous vehicles, I have always been used to resting my right hand on the shifter (even when auto trans) which always kept my index and middle fingers within reach of twiddling with the radio controls, which i would memorize and could manipulate without even looking at them after a while.
This could possibly be an indirect way of reducing distraction by forcing people to get more comfortable with the steering wheel media controls, since the media console itself is now out of twiddling reach.
.. still wish there was an optional cd player though.
