If your entire trip is highway speeds, it doesn't matter.

maximum economy is at about 50-55mph (80-85kmh)

best compromise between speed and economy is about 60-65 mph (100-105 kmh)

over about 70mph / 115kmh the wind resistance increases to the point it has a major effect on economy, the electric motor has difficulty keeping the car at a constant speed on its own, so it becomes a helper only

the best roads for hyper mileing are roads with gentle undulations over a 0.5 - 1.0 miles (0.75-1.5 km)

above all roads you can keep a constant speed on

Rather it depletes until it reaches a certain level and then reverts to a fixed hybrid mode, just like the hybrid. The driver has no control over recharge rates in this mode.
At that point it will restore battery to the lower level but will not complete battery above that.

For that one must plug in.
Gunslingerheel I understand that. The question I'm not asking very well is that if I am going on a long highway trip is it better to start off in EV until the ICE kicks on or just start out in hybrid mode and let it stay there? Thanks in advance.

to get maximum range out of the EV mode use it at lower speeds, BUT remember any EV range still left at the end is wasted energy, so it is a balancing act

bottom line is there is no right answer except make sure you use all the EV range before you next recharge

how you use it is personal preference

for max EV range use it on the flatter slower segments

to minimise city pollution use it when driving through built up areas

or just leave it and let the car manage it

there is no right or wrong answer,
