Hello! I am new here and I am considering a 2019 Ioniq Hybrid model. Does this car qualify for the Ontario green plate? I did a quick search but didn't find the info.

Thank you.

Problem getting green plate

I bought a 2019 PHEV in October, when it was delivered it had normal plates. I waited for 2019 to appear in the list and went to Service Ontario to ask about it. Hyundai had sent in the database of vehicle/VIN information with all models set to the default motive power code for gas engine (L). After some help line discussion the agent was able to change the code to PHEV (V) on my registration and issue new green plates. Cost $59.00.

I have a 2017 Hybrid and it does not qualify. The PHEV does.

Does anyone know what the current series of plate Letters and Numbers may be in Ontario? e.g., GVAA, GVVB, etc.?

Re: Green plates - you can only get those if the car is a plug-in or fully electric and, at least for the plug-in, you need to specifically tell the dealer to request green plates, as sometimes they don't know whet they are doing. Non plug-in hybrids do not qualify.

Re: current GV plate series - not 100% sure, but somewhere in the late GVB - I have already seen GVBX, but not GVBY or later.

I am in the US. What is the advantage of having a green plate? In the US one can receive US tax rebates for PHEV and an EV, but not an HEV. In some states there are state tax rebates too.

Thanks for the GV-- observation. Just curious as to what I may get when my Electric Plus comes in later this summer.

In Ontario, the green plate can let the PHEV/electric car driver travel solo in the high occupancy (HOV or carpool) lane.
