Did Anyone Get To Pick Their Number Plate? I'm told It's Automated??

I've been told I don't get to pick the number plate and it's automated, I've never heard of this before.

I was also told my car is in the UK now.

Back in 1983 I bought a new Ford Escort. It was a factory order taking twelve weeks and I was given the choice of reg numbers when I ordered it, by the dealer.

In the event, it took twelve weeks to deliver a bog standard Escort without the options I ordered and put my reg on it.

I refused it and bought one elsewhere with an ordinary reg.

A couple of years ago we bought personal reg numbers from DVLA (they were nothing fancy, perfect for us and cheap)
Each time we change cars I just assign the plates to them. Itís quite normal to reassign the original reg when selling.

The dealer has a list of a couple of dozen number plate options you can choose from. This is normal practice. How else can the dealership register cars :-)

last time I was offered a choice of registration was about 15 years ago,

nothing would surprise me to find that DVLA use an online portal where the dealer puts in the basics (make, model, VIN etc) and they get a reg allocated with no choice

Yes that sounds likely. DVLA will sell whatever they can these days!

When I bought a brand new Focus in 2013 I chose the registration number from a list of over 50. When I bought my Ioniq last year I also chose the registration number, but the list was smaller. Where I work thou' (commercial vehicle dealer) the customer doesn't have a choice so it must be up to the dealer.

If you don't ask the dealer will just allocate next number on there list of allocared numbers from dvla, if the choice was less it will be because they are getting to the end of that batch of numbers allocated! Was advised by my dealer that even though I was having my private plate on car to get a number allocated first, making it easier when selling as i already knew reg no that would be on car and already had plates to put on for selling pics!

`Er indoors and I bought our Ioniq's the same day and were given a choice of numbers assigned to the dealer - we chose registrations a single digit apart so as not to confuse the poor DVLA, who are well-known to be corporately stupid...!

Her's ends in `D`, mine `F` - the opportunity for a frack-up with an E and an F was just too risky, particularly to Welsh-speakers!
