I told delivery of a 2019 Ioniq SEL today. I have two questions.
1) The service manager told me that 3500 miles/3 months for oil change. I said Hyundai says 7500. He responded that this is for normal driving and Michigan has extreme weather. This sounds bogus to me. What do you think?
2) Do you know whether the fabric seats are treated with something like scotchgard?
Yes, it is bogus! Especially since you are only using the engine about 60% of the time. Might want to check out another service department. Where ever you take it for an oil an filter change, I would suggest a synthetic oil. If it does not tell you in the manual that the seats have been treated with some form of protectant, I would doubt they are.
I agree that it's bogus but even on Hyundai's website, if you select any option like you sometimes drive when it's snowy or sometimes when it's really hot, it changes you to extreme and starts recommending more frequent oil changes. I stick to 7500 miles even though I do drive in the winter and sometimes it even gets hot out.
As far as synthetic oil goes, I believe it has to be anyway since the recommended weight only comes in synthetic.
Stick two rhetorical fingers in your dealers direction - at 3,500 miles look for the update notice on the dash - if it doesn't appear you can do your own oil change at 3,500 or get an oil change specialist to do it.
Then go to the dealer to INSIST they reset the oil change notification, which will cost them workshop time as they won't be able to find it... >
Aah! Justice is a dish best served cold - like revenge!
Completely bogus! A Kia dealership tried to pull the same **** on me years ago, saying the weather of Florida means the car is constantly being used in severe conditions. I contacted Kia directly and they contradicted the dealerships statements, I showed the dealership the email and they apologized and my next 3 oil changes were free!
It astonishes me how much disinformation and ignorance there is in the US over oil changes, where even dealers often ignore the intervals recommended by manufacturers in favour of oil changes every 5,000 miles or even less.
If they were right, one would have to think that there's something terribly wrong with North American oil products!
Except for free oil changes offered by a dealer, I have never taken my vehicles to a dealer for and oil changes. Of course I have my own shop and an auto lift so it is very easy to do it my self. I also know it is done right using the lubricants I prefer.
The oil change is very wrong. "Severe" conditions demand oil changes every 3750 miles. That includes driving on salted roads There is a risk that if you don't service it that much, Hyundai won't honor the warranty. I don't know if that actually happens though.
I would stick with the 7500 recommendation and keep a closer eye on the "Hybrid belt," brakes, transmission fluid, and gear box. This comes from the car manual on page 7-13
I agree. I can’t imagine how driving on salted roads would impact the oil change interval. It might impact the body rust protection and possibly air filter replacement schedule. But your roads are not salted year round.
I live in Colorado, mountain driving and snow. My dealer still says 7500. Took it there one time for the oil change when they had a great discount going. Else I go to a reputable shop for a lot less money.
I just got a notice that Service is due in 800 miles, I'm setting at 2400 give or take so that would be at about 3500 for service. I don't consider Indiana driving severe! LOL
I'll have to check with my dealer when it come up.
I have a 2017 ioniq sel and on the oil filler cap it says OW/20
this weight oil is only available in fully synthetic blend
I usually wait 6 month's before i change my oil
My ioniq has 1 6,000 trouble free miles on it now
Wow, amazing how quickly you all are willing to spread bad information on account of your hatred for dealerships. I'm not going to go through all of it right now, but this thread has some bad advice and/or downright bad information in it. Read at your own risk.
"Hatred of dealerships"?? Precisely what lead you into that delusion?
This is a discussion on oil changes. Noting that a dealer provided bad information does not provide an example of "hatred of dealerships".
It was noted that 0-20 will be a synthetic oil. A synthetic oil will easily go 7500 miles. I have been using synthetics ( Mobil 1 almost exclusively ) since they were introduced in the 70s. I have has exactly zero problems due to lubrication failure.
Mobil one extreme synthetic oil has been advertised an annual oil able to go 15,000 miles per change
i would never let my ioniq go this long between services, but it is nice to know that it is a very sturdy product able to handle extreme conditions if warranted
