Launching in the European market with a starting price of just £24,995 for a Premium model, the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid is set to undercut one of its strongest rivals, the Toyota Prius Prime.
Sitting between its hybrid (£20,585) and full electric (£29,495) siblings, the Ioniq PHEV will be sold in the UK with a sticker price that’s £4,200 less than a Toyota Prius Prius Plug-In Hybrid. Even with a £2,500 government grant, the Prius will still set you back £29,195 pounds.
For less money, those who decide to purchase an Ioniq PHEV will drive home in a vehicle powered by a 104bhp 1.6 GDI direct-injection petrol engine and a 55bhp electric motor. Getting that motor moving is a 8.9kWh lithium ion polymer battery pack with an electric drive range of 39 miles. According to AutoCar, when that motor is combined with the engine, the Ioniq can achieve a fuel economy rating of up to 257mpg and produce it’ll 26g/km of CO2 emissions.
Making the PHEV model even more competitive is a thermal efficiency of 40%, which is exactly the same as its Prius rival. Then there’s the aerodynamic hexagonal grille with moving flaps to redirect airflow, an eco-friendly and more.
The Hyundai Ioniq lineup breaks the mould for hybrid vehicles, more-so now with the Plug-In on its way.
